Supernatural Season 5, Episode 1 recap: Bobby overpowers a demon
Lucifer is out and the Winchesters need to figure out how to stop him. Well, that’s if they can figure out how to get away from the devil being released from his cage in Supernatural Season 5, Episode 1.
Supernatural Season 5, Episode 1 brought us answers to that conclusion from the Season 4 finale. We found out how the Winchesters would escape the rising devil extremely quickly. However, the episode didn’t bring a lot of good news, especially when one of our own was possessed.
After looking back at Season 4, it’s time to move forward with the fifth season. Here’s a look at everything that happened in the Supernatural Season 5 premiere.

The episode started where the fourth season finale left us. As Lucifer broke free, we watched the Winchesters helpless. That is until the two are suddenly transported to a plane flying over Maryland, the place Lucifer had just been rising from.
When they land, the two head to see Chuck, who shares that Castiel was blown apart by the archangel protecting him. More than that, Zachariah returns, sharing that Dean needs to battle Lucifer. Of course, Dean is done with that and has already drawn an angel banishing sigil. With Zachariah and his other angels gone, it’s time to hide from them.
Sam knows how thanks to tricks Ruby taught him. Sam also wants to talk about what happened, but Dean isn’t interested. All he wants to do is find Lucifer and it’s time to treat it like any hunt.

Chuck has a message
We jump to Beck Rosen, a Supernatural superfan in the middle of writing Wincest fanfiction. In the middle of a section, she gets an instant message from Chuck, who has a message for teh Winchesters. It doesn’t make sense: the “angels have lost Michael’s Sword” and it can be found “in a castle on a hill made of 42 dogs.”
Looking back now, it’s easy to see what it means but at the time? Hmm.
Bobby helps to figure out the location. John’s journal has a storage facility mentioned, Castle Storage on 42 Rover Hill.
Lucifer finds his vessel
Meanwhile, Lucifer is looking for his vessel. That leads us to Nick, who imagines a blood full of bed. His deceased wife lies beside him, whispering “you’re special.”
Throughout the episode, we learn that Nick’s wife and child were murdered during a home invasion. The grieving man is hallucinating and Lucifer appears as Nick’s wife to get him to consent to possession. To do this, Lucifer manages to convince Nick that God is uncaring or a sadist and that while possession will be painful, it will allow Nick to get justice.
We know now that it was all manipulation. Lucifer is the master of manipulation. Yet it’s easy to see why Nick said yet.
Meg is back
One thing that tipped us off to something being wrong with Bobby was how he’d told Sam he wanted nothing to do with him for releasing Lucifer. Bobby would never turn against the Winchesters for a mistake like this.
It’s not surprising to learn that Bobby is possessed. Not only that, but Meg is back.
In the middle of a fight, Bobby is able to overcome the possession and stabs himself with Ruby’s knife, killing the demon. Meanwhile, Sam shows up and takes care of other demons. However, Meg leaves her vessel and escapes.
The Winchesters get Bobby to the hospital and then head off to John’s lock-up. It was all a trap. Zachariah had sent Chuck a fake message to get Dean to the lock-up. After all, Dean is Michael’s Sword but Michael needs Dean’s consent.
When Dean refuses to give that, Zachariah breaks one of Sam’s legs, makes it clear Bobby will never walk again, gives Dean advanced stomach cancer, and takes Sam’s lungs away. Just as it looks like Dean will have no choice but to say yes, Castiel shows up and orders Zachariah to make Sam and Dean whole again.
Castiel doesn’t share how he’s back but does help to protect Sam and Dean from angels and demons. He burns Enochian sigils into their ribs. The downside is only Sam and Dean were made whole. Bobby will never walk again, according to a doctor.
Just as we thought it couldn’t get any worse, it does. As Sam apologizes for his part in releasing Lucifer, Dean makes it clear that he doesn’t know if he will ever be able to trust his brother again. Not a great start to Supernatural Season 5.
