Portrayed by the excellent Titus Welliver, who had also been on LOST with Mark Pellegrino, we got to see just how dangerous these demons could be and the beginning of the collection of keys.

Meanwhile, Castiel shared some truths about his current predicament, including his search for God. He only needed one thing from Dean.

The search for God

The episode starts with Castiel needing to call Sam on the cell. With the Enochian symbols on their ribs, Castiel can’t locate them. Once he gets the information, Castiel turns up annoyed that the Winchesters hadn’t stopped Lucifer from being released. Now it’s time for him to search for God.

He needs Dean’s amulet to do so. Yes, the necklace Dean got from Sam all those years ago. Little did we know in “A Very Supernatural Kitchen” that the necklace would mean far more.

Meanwhile, we cut to Rufus who is in a town under attack from demons. He calls Ellen and Jo and then Bobby for help. It’s time for the case of the week, which actually turns into a plot-heavy storyline.

The Winchesters get to the town to find out Ellen and Jo have been separated. When Sam heads to the store for salt, two black-eyed teens enter and Sam uses Ruby’s demon-killing knife on them. They don’t flash. In fact, he draws blood.

It doesn’t take too long to figure out what’s going on. When Jo and Rufus capture Sam, believing him to be possessed, it’s clear that the two sides of the town believe each other are the demons. There’s only one demon that could do this: War.

One of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse has to be in town. Now they need to figure out who. Both Sam and Dean independently realize what they’re dealing with. When a man with Dean and Ellen start to rile the townspeople up to attack the “demons” on the other side, Dean and Ellen try to calm people down.

With a twist of his ring, War makes it look like Dean and Ellen are demons. They have no choice but to flee for now.

Getting the first ring

Dean and Ellen manage to get to Jo and Rufus, convincing them they’re not actually demons. Now with Sam, everyone can catch each other up and it’s time to go off after War.

The Winchesters catch up with him and cut off his finger, collecting the War ring. Little do they know right now, they’re going to need these rings.

It all ends with Sam being honest with Dean. He can’t trust himself and needs to take a break. And it’s not just from hunting. He needs to take a break from Dean, and that’s something Dean surprisingly agrees on. Dean admits he can’t keep his mind on hunting because he’s worried about what Sam is doing.

And that’s it. The Winchesters have separated. At least, for now.
