There are certainly beings in Supernatural that end up with quirky nicknames. One of those nicknames came in Supernatural Season 5, Episode 3, as the archangel Raphael was introduced. As Castiel and Dean teamed up for the first time, Sam considered giving up hunting.

Can’t remember much about the episode, titled “Free to Be You and Me?” Don’t worry! Here’s a look back to remind you of a time Sam and Dean started growing further apart, as Sam learned his part to play in the apocalypse.

Sam dreams of Lucifer

Throughout the episode, Sam had dreams of Jessica, his long-dead girlfriend. At first, he thinks that this is Jessica in his dreams, but it’s soon clear that this is something else. It isn’t until the end of the episode that we learn Jessica is Lucifer, coming to see Sam in his dreams.

It’s certainly a major power. This episode delivers the news that Sam is supposed to be Lucifer’s true vessel. Lucifer is sure that eventually, Sam will allow Lucifer to possess him. As much as we wanted him to always say no, this belief eventually came true.

What is clear from all this is that Sam and Dean have gone their separate ways. We do get a flash of this, seeing that Sam just wants a normal life. He even calls Bobby with a potential case in the town he’s got a job, but refuses to be the hunter to deal with it.

Meanwhile, Dean is still hunting.

Dean and Castiel team up

Castiel turns to Dean for help. To find God, he needs to find the archangel Raphael. This is the archangel that killed Castiel and Dean starts to wonder if this is a revenge hunt. It’s not and Castiel needs Dean because there is no way any angel would harm Michael’s vessel.

It turns out that Raphael’s vessel is currently in St. Pete’s Hospital, apparently brain damaged from being possessed by such a powerful being. With the archangel gone, Castiel decides it’s time for a spell to trap the archangel, knowing that he’ll probably die.

Castiel’s last night on Earth

Dean decides that Castiel is not going to die without one last night on the town, which leads to taking Castiel to a brothel. He even pays for Castiel to spend a night with one of the strippers, learning that Castiel is a virgin.

For those who live through scenes and not episodes, this is the moment Castiel brings up the girl’s father running away. Poor Castiel. He doesn’t get what Dean paid for, but Dean does get some major laughs in the process.

Back in the house, the two have been squatting in isn’t so great. Raphael is trapped in the holy oil and explains that God is dead and he believes Lucifer resurrected Castiel. Of course, Cass refuses to believe that. Castiel and Dean leave, keeping Raphael locked in the bringing holy oil.

As Dean and Castiel bond over missing fathers, Castiel makes it clear that he’s sure God is still alive. However, as Dean admits that he’s had more fun in the last 24 hours than ever with Sam, Castiel disappears from the car, leaving Dean alone.

Sam tries to remain out of the game

Three hunters, Steve, Reggie, and Time, walk into the bar that Sam is working. Bobby sent them the case and want Sam in on it. Of course, he turns them down.

A girl at the bar Sam works with takes a liking to Sam and tries to get him to open up. She assumes he had an addiction and that’s what damaged the relationship between Dean and Sam. She isn’t completely off and the girl, Lindsay, shares her own addiction.

This connection is what the hunters use to get back at Sam. There was a higher-than-expected number of demons and one of the trio has died. Now they want him to drink demon blood to take out all the demons in the town. Tom force-feeds Sam the blood, but he spits it back out before beating them and forcing them to leave.

It’s after this he learns that he’s Lucifer’s vessel.
