CBS has announced three freshman shows have got a second season. God Friended Me wasn’t one of them but it deserves to be renewed. Here’s why a second season is necessary.

God Friended Me was one of the first to get a full-season order last year but hasn’t been on the list of freshman shows to get a second season. CBS announced that FBI, Magnum P.I., and The Neighborhood are all renewed for another year, but the Sunday night feel-good dramedy was left out.

This is a show that deserves a second season. It’s a socially conscious show, raising awareness and focusing on doing the right thing. Despite the use of the God Account, it’s not a show that pushes religion down your throat. In fact, main character Miles (Michael Brandon Hall) is an outspoken atheist who doesn’t believe that God is actually behind the account. Instead, he knows there’s a human who just wants him to be kind and do the right thing.

Each episode gives Miles a new friend request. They’ve all been connected to him or to other friend requests in some sort of way, whether they’ve been linked through his father’s church, the accident that happened 17 years ago, or even to the events in the pilot episode. Every friend request he is sent is someone who needs his help — and they don’t always realize they need it. Miles has to figure out why they need his help and solve the problem.

This feel-good series isn’t just about helping people, but being selfless. There’s this focus on forgiveness and dealing with life’s problems. “17 Years” delivered one of the toughest challenges: forgiving the person who had caused the death of his mother 17 years earlier.

Despite knowing friend requests are about helping people, Miles couldn’t initially help. We got this understandably flawed human and a real look at humanity and how people can and do change.

With beautiful and impressive writing, excellent character development, and a diverse cast, this is a show that stands the chance of becoming the next NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy, and Supernatural in terms of having a passionate fanbase and continuing for years to come. CBS just needs to give it a chance.

So, why hasn’t it been renewed yet? There could be a few reasons for this. One of those is the fact that God Friended Me is currently on a long break due to its Sunday night schedule (Big Brother, the Super Bowl, and the Grammy Awards are among the reasons for the change of schedule) so the network isn’t sure what the ratings will be like when it returns. However, another reason could be contracts, as some may have already come up for renewal.

I think in the next few weeks we should hear about God Friended Me getting a second season. I sure hope that’s the case, anyway.
