Studios in talks with James Gunn to helm DCEU’s Suicide Squad 2. What was once Marvel Studios’ phase four influential helmer seems to be Warner Bros. big game changer.

Suicide Squad 2 is next on the slate of DC movies. Now an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter announced that the former Guardians of the Galaxy 3 director, James Gunn, is in talks with Warner Bros. to helm DC’s version of a team of misfits. How well do you think his directing style will carry over from Marvel to the DC big screen?

Gunn was already writing a script for Suicide Squad 2 and the movie is slated for an August 2021 release. In the meantime, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is still on hold and still looking for a new director.

Gunn just might come out of the chute with not only one, but two roles under the umbrella of Warner Bros. When Gunn was fired, studios were already gunning for his talent, so it goes to show how much in demand he is. It also seems that he is not deterred from his craft after his firing from Marvel Studios.

I am thinking he’ll hit the project from a different angle as this team tends to have a grittier history. The Hollywood Reporter said it does have sources that seem to reinforce what I was thinking. Apparently, they stated that the director’s “focus is to take the franchise in a new direction with a mostly all-new cast of characters and actors”. With that said, I think the head honchos at Warner Bros. have a vision and it seems they feel that Gunn will take their franchise down a highly desirable path.

That being said, let’s take a look back when Disney severed ties with the director. According to a We Got This Covered article, Gunn was said to be an adviser to “shepherd” further the cosmic world of characters and the films that involve them. Gunn has had his hands in Captain Marvel and Avengers: Infinity War.

If you go way back to August 2017, Gunn was set to usher the MCU by collaborating with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in “discussing what is the next iteration of cosmic characters and where are the characters that we’ve already created going to go in the next batch of films”, according to Heat Vision via The Hollywood Reporter.

I do wonder since the director has experience directing two films geared towards a team of misfits, who is no better qualified to direct Suicide Squad under a similar premise? Do you think Gunn can pull it off?
