How could John Winchester return in Supernatural Episode 300?

Supernatural Episode 300 will see the return of John Winchester. While that’s no secret, the way he will come back is. Just what are the options?

John Winchester is back on Supernatural. It’s no surprise that he’s going to be part of Supernatural Episode 300 (with no way to avoid the spoiler) but it’s not clear how he’ll return. What are the potential options?

However, as fair warning, there are some potential spoilers from this point as I use the trailer and sneak peek from The CW to help.

Before last week, I would have said that there were plenty of ways he could return. However, the trailer and sneak peek have minimized the options. They tell us the basis of the episode.

It’s all about a wish. Dean finds a pearl that could give him his greatest desire. That’s not John Winchester back, but Michael out of his head. However, it looks like this wish isn’t going to quite work out.

My theory is that the wish develops some sort of time reversal. To get rid of the Michael problem, Sam and Dean had to go different ways at other points in their timeline. It looks like they may not have even reunited at the very start of the series, which could certainly lead to a way to bring John back.

If Sam and Dean didn’t reunite, they wouldn’t have both gone on the search for their dad. This wouldn’t have led to Yellow Eyes possessing him and there wouldn’t have been the car accident that almost took Dean’s life. John wouldn’t have made the deal for his son.

This would allow John to still be alive while both his sons are. So, with time reversed, John is out there somewhere.

It also explains how Zachariah could still be alive and how Castiel is back to his stickler self. Dean wouldn’t have killed Zachariah and wouldn’t have had an impact on Castiel. Whether Michael and Lucifer are looking at the apocalypse or not isn’t known, but either way, it looks like time reversal will help bring characters back with plausible explanations.
