You’re the Worst Season 5, Episode 5: A Very Good Boy recap

You’re the Worst dares everyone to act like a normal human being on a regular basis, but it’s highly unlikely with their perpetual dysfunction.

Could there really be a group of people so twisted as the people on You’re the Worst? Other than perhaps the Kardashians, there’s no way this much drama could follow such a small group.

This episode starts with a scene that appears to portend a problem for the future husband and wife. Gretchen checks into a fancy hotel and proceeds to steal everything that isn’t bolted down, other than the alcohol. Then she wrecks the room. Why is she in the hotel?

Jimmy’s in charge of the wedding.

Despite considering himself an edgy, bad-boy archetype, he’s in charge of the wedding planning. On today’s agenda are the DJ and the flower centerpieces. He sits down with Gretchen to talk DJs, and they sift through several losers like DJ Thugtastic. Eventually they get to a video by a guy named Nok Nok, and it’s somewhere in the center of a Venn diagram between weird, stupid, and entrancing. Gretchen says it’s like an “Ox’d out redneck rapping behind an Arby’s.” I happen to think it’s a lot like Riff Raff.

They can’t get enough, and move on to the big news. Jimmy lets her know they have a florist, and she thinks the “wedding is about to classy AF.” Wedding sorted, Jimmy readies to go write, at his scheduled time, his scheduled coffee shop, and his corner spot with an outlet. Gretch and Edgar laugh about Jimmy’s stability and domestication, but he contends he’s a bad boy. More laughter follows, and he’s informed that girls don’t marry the bad boy, bang him until he robs a store.

Gretchen’s professional epiphany

Post-promotion, Gretchen dives into a massive food spread. It’s just before a meeting with her new boss. Nobody else is eating, and it’s time to pitch new clients. Gretchen has none, so she stakes her reputation on Nok Nok. Unexpectedly, her boss instructs everyone else to research this unknown, and Gretchen freaks out. Much to her surprise, however, it leads to a one on one with her boss later that night for drinks.

During the meeting, Gretchen – who thinks she’s going to be fired – calls herself a fraud. Relating to Gretchen, her boss was once “just a rich girl who liked to f*** musicians.” Then her boss got serious and rose through the ranks. She ponders how unstoppable Gretchen might be if she tried. Unfortunately, Gretchen is going to be forced to do her trying with Nok Nok, and her position is on the line.

Incompatibility

Edgar and Lindsay were never going to work. Sloppy, difficult-to-watch-sex is the only thing keeping them together. And even that gets interrupted, because Becca and Vernon are also living in Lindsay’s apartment. Vernon pops his head in mid-coitus and says “NOICE!”

Later, Lindsay and Edgar decide to go on a date that ends miserably. They both freak out and ditch the other. Their alleyway recognition is the nail in the relationship coffin. Sex is the only thing they have.

Similarly, Vernon and Becca are incompatible with decency. Since Jimmy wouldn’t give them money for their Korean meatball truck into a roving medical truck, they have a new plan. Paul comes over to artificially inseminate Becca. The bathroom is where he does his deed, with the aid of Lindsay’s photo. The catch? He’s paying Vernon and Becca $5K a pop, and they’re just tossing his seed out the window.

Jimmy’s long transition back to bad boy

At the coffee shop we learn Jimmy told the barista to shame him for not making page count. Drinking decaf to avoid jitters, Jimmy has all his highlighters, pencils, and belongings aligned. He attempts to steal the laptop belonging to the guy beside him, but can’t bring himself to do it. A street vendor’s hotdog nearly causes him to vomit.

Meeting with the florist later, Jimmy picks out calla lilies and hydrangeas. Somehow that leads him to a hard rock show, a massive most pit, and a BJ in the club’s back room. Bad boy indeed.

Well, Gretchen cheated at the bar, and now Jimmy stepped it up a notch at the club. At this rate, can they make it to the wedding?
