There’s one word to describe the Supernatural Episode 300: Epic. It was everything we needed but what was with the ending? Here’s an explanation.

Supernatural Episode 300 was epic. There’s no other way to describe the nostalgia and throwbacks, but also that family reunion. There wasn’t a dry eye around the world watching. But what about that ending? It’s time to break it down.

As you would expect, there are spoilers in this post. It should seem obvious but I’m warning you just in case!

After getting John back, the Winchesters realized that he would need to return. John just disappearing in his timeline had a knock on effect and everyone knew that returning him to his own timeline was necessary. So, that’s what they did after a family meal (and what a family meal it was).

That’s where the ending comes into play. We cut to John in Baby with flip phone (because you remember those phones from the early 00s, right?) waking from what he thinks is a dream. Dean is checking in on him, just like Dean always did in the past. It was the only way Dean wouldn’t worry about his dad — and the lack of checking in was what set up the storyline in the first place.

He mentions that he had a dream, one that he’s still reeling from. Everyone was warned that John would never remember the events of the future. He wouldn’t know what was to come and wouldn’t be able to change anything (because arguably things shouldn’t be changed) but he also wouldn’t remember seeing Mary again after so many years.

To him, it was all a dream. Like every dream, it would eventually fade away to nothing; a distant memory where there may be the odd flashes of seeing Mary or his grownup sons, but none of the details. He certainly wouldn’t believe everything that was said during the dream, believing it to be his mind playing tricks on him.

And this was a beautiful way to end it. We got to see where John was sent back to and those memories of him on hunts alone, in contact with only one of his sons.
