There wasn’t a dry eye in the house during Supernatural 300. It was everything we needed and everything the Winchester brothers needed. Out of all the versions of John that could have been in the episode, the one we got was the best for Dean’s closure.

I’ll just state it now that there are spoilers for those who are still to watch Supernatural 300. Check it out on the CW App and then return to this post!

Supernatural 300 was the most emotional episode we’ve had in a good way in a very long time. It was packed with nostalgia, meta moments, and storyline. Most importantly, we and the Winchesters got the closure we needed.

There were many theories floating around about the John Winchester that would return. Would we get to find out what happened to John’s spirit after he got out of Hell? What about an alternate world version of the character?

Instead, we got the best possible version for Dean’s (and even Sam’s) closure. This was a real version and one from the past; one that was still hard on his sons and wasn’t even talking to one of them.

Dean has always wanted praise from his dad. He’s needed to know that John is proud of him and that’s something he’s never had the chance of gaining. Hearing how proud John is from another version would have been good and sweet, but it meant so much more coming from this 2003 version of him.

The 2003 version of John was a hardened man. He barely had a good word to say, so focused on revenge. You could see when John originally showed up that he was this tough nut and full of speculation. And then he found out about everything that happened, got his Mary back, and had the chance to see the type of men his sons had become — would become for him.

We got this softer side to a man that Dean and Sam had grown up disliking a lot. It may have all been water under the bridge for the Winchesters by this point but for John, it was all still raw. To be able to push through all those mixed emotions with the memories so fresh and show his pride for Dean was a major thing. It was everything Dean needed.
