When a 24-year-old dies of old age

It all starts with a curious case. Bobby learns of a 24-year-old who dies of old age, leading to the Winchesters investigating. When they start looking for local missing person cases, they speak to a woman whose husband tends to work late on Tuesdays. It’s not long until Dean finds a receipt to an hourly hotel.

Of course, he works late…

When the Winchesters check out the hotel, they find a young man in the room who has the exact same tattoo as the older man they’re looking for. After some questioning, the Winchesters find out that Cliff met an Irish guy called Patrick in a bar and won a poker game against him. He ended up years younger.

By the time the Winchesters figure out where the poker game is, they see Bobby leaving, who admits he lost 25 years. Yep, this guy is a witch and has a magic poker game where you play for years.

Trying to get the years back

Dean decides to get Bobby’s 25 years back but threatening with a pistol doesn’t work. It’s not going to do anything to the he-witch. Instead, Patrick offers the chance to play a game. Dean plays for 50 years, giving 25 to Bobby immediately.

It’s no surprise that things go from bad to worse. When Sam gets back to the motel room, he finds out that Dean is now an old man. It’s clear the poker chips that Patrick uses are the key to taking the years. Now they need to find Patrick and are able to follow him to his apartment, sneak in, and see where the chips are kept.

All too easy? Of course, it is!

Another game?

Patrick knew that he was being followed and the chips are just for show anyway. He’s the one that can grant the years back and offers Sam a game since Dean is already old. Dean doesn’t want his brother playing, so they leave — although not before Patrick gives Sam “the clap.”

The following day, Sam still wants to play but neither Dean or Bobby think he’s good enough. Bobby is the best poker player and is clear that he doesn’t have much to live for. It’s at this moment we learn that Bobby is on the edge of suicide with everything that’s happened to him.

When Patrick’s girlfriend Lia shows up with a way to reverse everything for all those still alive (including her and Patrick), the Winchesters aren’t sure whether to trust her. She says she has her reasons while fondling a locket and now it’s time to create a distraction.

Not quite the distraction needed

Sam heads to play a game of poker against Patrick and Lia helps to distract (so Sam can get the toothpick Patrick has been using), while Bobby and Dean dig up a grave to get a murderer’s jawbone for the spell. Unfortunately, the spell doesn’t work because that wasn’t the right toothpick and doesn’t have Patrick’s DNA.

Sam is left to return to the game, while Dean and Bobby try to find some DNA of the witch. Despite Sam managing to win a hand, Patrick shares that Dean will die within minutes — and Sam isn’t allowed to go to save him. Sam decides to go all in and fortunately has a winning hand. It’s just in time as Dean is able to leave the apartment his own age again.

What was the reason for Lia helping? That locket had a photo of an infant and an elderly woman, both the same person; Lia’s daughter. She’d hoped to finally die, so she decides to play for all her chips, losing the game so she’s able to move on.

As for the Winchesters and Bobby, Dean makes it extremely clear that Bobby is needed and wanted by him. He can stop feeling sorry for himself.
