This week on The Gifted, a tragic event befalls the Mutant Underground. Here are the five takeaways from the latest episode!

It’s been a while since The Gifted has been on FOX due to the rescheduling of the State of the Union but now the show is back with a massive bang of an episode. The last episode, Marcos had killed Max and it was left open to interpretation how injured he was from the scuffle. The Strucker family also had a conflict with the Frost sisters attempting to overpower Lauren in her dreams which resulted in Reed giving her the serum that suppresses the X-gene.

This week the show returns and the stakes are becoming extremely high. Jace is back this episode continuing his path down the road of characters that are forever unredeemable. The Morlocks find themselves under attack by an unforeseen threat that causes them to make drastic changes. Last but certainly not least, the episode ends on a shocking note that might rattle some fans of the show.

The title of the episode is “CalaMity,” which means “a great misfortune or disaster, as a flood or serious injury.” This title should make many of you uncomfortable because it certainly fits.

Massive spoilers will follow. Here are the five takeaways from the latest episode of The Gifted!

1. Reeva controls the Purifiers

The episode kicked off answering questions about the relationship between Benedict Ryan and Reeva Paige. For the longest time it seemed like Ryan was a man of his own unfortunate creation but in the opening flashback, we discover that Reeva made him a popular figure. Furthermore, we discover that Ryan is just a pawn in whatever game she is playing.

What is clear from this interaction is Reeva actually controls the Purifiers and set them in place for a reason. That reason though is still unclear.

When we push forward to the present day, she lays out her next intended use for him. She gives him intel on the Morlocks and where their hideout is located and demands that Ryan use the Purifiers to rid them from existence. The next scene has Ryan meeting with Jace to carry out the mission and he reluctantly agrees.

Why? Because somehow it impedes on his principles. My question: What principles? That said, he accepts because of course he does.

2. The Struckers are about to go through changes

After the last episode, Lauren began to feel the unfortunate side effect of suppressing one’s powers. When we first see her she is finally sleeping because she does not have to worry about being attacked in her sleep. This leads to her having cold sweats while she sleeps and a sudden random ability to speak German in her sleep. The sickness forces Reed to tell Kate about the letter and music box that came from past family members. It also infuriates Kate that Reed never told her about it.

Later in the episode, while driving to save the Morlocks, Lauren decides she does not want to take the X-gene suppressant anymore and would rather face whatever darkness is trying to overtake her. Reed himself gets moved by her choice and decides to quit also and see what his powers will become if he embraces them.

It’s still confusing why the letter and music box has caused Lauren to go full blown dark but maybe we’ll get a valid explanation of that in Season 3. That said, what will be interesting to see is what comes of Reed and Lauren’s decision to quit taking the mutant suppression medicine and confront the darkness inside.

3. An unfortunate casualty of war caused by Lorna

Reeva continued her hot streak of shaking things up by shutting the Inner Circle down to scope for spies. This is caused by the events of the last episode where Max was killed by Marcos. Max not returning to base sets off Reeva’s spidey-sense that something is wrong.

Once she finds out Max has been killed, she automatically pieces together that it has to be one of her own because that’s the only way someone would know his daily routine. This also puts Lorna immediately on guard because she is the reason he died.

In a weird twist of fate, Reeva’s attempts to find out who did it lead her to Sage. Reason being, Lorna used Sage’s computer to dig up information on Max and attained the password using her powers.

Reeva and the Frost triplets are completely ignorant to the fact that Lorna can hack a computer using her gifts. So all signs point to Sage being the spy because only she would have the password. Reeva shows no mercy and kills Sage with little hesitation.

Once Lorna finds out she’s overcome with guilt that her simple action caused Sage’s death. This will probably change her methods going forward in upcoming episodes of the show.
