Last Man Standing star Jonathan Adams dishes on Chuck’s big episode and what it was like to return for Last Man Standing Season 7 on a new network.

Tonight’s Last Man Standing is an important episode for Jonathan Adams, as Chuck heads back to the altar to renew his vows with wife Carol. But it’s also different because Carol is now played by Tisha Campbell (My Wife and Kids).

Hidden Remote spoke to Jonathan ahead of the episode to discuss what to expect from Chuck’s vow renewal, what it was like returning to the show when FOX gave it a second shot this season, and how comedic acting compares to his many dramatic roles—you may also remember him as Dr. Daniel Goodman on Bones!

Check out what he had to tell us below, then check out Jonathan Adams in two new episodes of Last Man Standing starting at 8 p.m. tonight on FOX!

Hidden Remote: This season of Last Man Standing has been talked about because of the show being revived at FOX. What was your reaction to getting to play Chuck again?

Jonathan Adams: It was surprised. That was my very first reaction. And then I didn’t believe it. I kept saying I’m not going to read [the script] until I get to that table read and we’re actually there with everybody.

Then I said okay, well I won’t believe it until I get to [taping] the audience show. And then we actually did that and it was on the air and I had to believe it. I was very happy and I was shocked and amazed. It’s a dream come true, it’s great.

More from FOX

HR: Was there some adjustment in coming back to the role? Having to find Chuck’s voice again?

JA: It was ridiculously easy to come back and do this show again. We walked in there like we had just taken a three-month hiatus, and everything was just like the way it was before.

I was very familiar with the character already and I was very familiar with these actors, and we’d worked together for so long [that] it just clicked right away. It was unbelievably smooth. It was weird actually, how easy it was to get back into it.

HR: Tonight’s first episode “The Best Man” features Chuck renewing his vows. But you’re doing it with a different actress because the role of Carol was recast. What can we say about the plot and what was it like to play opposite a new TV wife?

JA: That’s going to be a very sweet episode and it was a lot of fun. [The recasting] was different. I miss Erika [Alexander]; she’s a great actress. But now we have a new Carol; she’s great too.

HR: TV fans know you’ve also done a lot of drama before Last Man Standing. What dramatic role would you tell viewers to watch if they want to see that side of Jonathan Adams?

JA: I really liked doing American Dreams, which was years ago. It was a great show on for three seasons, on NBC. It was [like] all those NBC family dramas that they do so very well…in that vein and genre of Parenthood, This is Us, I’ll Fly Away. It didn’t get the traction that I felt it should have and I really loved playing that role.

Also recently, I did a role on Castle as this super bad guy. It was so fun because he was so evil; it would give you chills to watch this guy. It was just so much of a blast to do.

HR: Which is more of a challenge—drama or comedy?

JA: It’s comedy. Comedy is just a bear because it’s all about timing and it’s all about nuance and what your face is doing and where you are. It’s incredibly specific and yet it has to feel absolutely organic, and that is just the most difficult thing to do for me.

Drama, on the other hand, all you have to do is stay on the line and know what you’re saying and why you’re saying and make it as honest as possible. Comedy requires that honesty, as well as another layer of timing and specifics that takes it to another level.

HR: You’ve also established an excellent voice acting career. Anything you’ve loved doing in that respect?

JA: I really had a great time doing the stuff I do [in] animation. I’ve worked on some games too. I’d love to do Diablo 4. I was Tyrael in Diablo 3 and I really liked doing that. Green Lantern—we only did a season of that—I was the bad guy in that one, Atrocitus, and that was a lot of fun. I’m doing [voice work] occasionally now so yeah, I’m not retired from the animation and game business.
