Now Streaming: The Umbrella Academy Season 1 on Netflix
By John Dotson
Looking for a superhero fix now that Netflix is canceling so many Marvel shows? Say no more because The Umbrella Academy is now streaming!
Netflix may be canceling Marvel shows like they are playing a game of “Whack-a-Mole” but that’s not stopping the streaming service from embracing more superheroes. Starting today viewers will be blessed with a new comic adaptation of The Umbrella Academy which looks surprisingly different for a genre overcrowded with ideas.
This should be an interesting gamble for the streaming platform as well. Soon as Disney launches their streaming service we’re going to have to say a mournful goodbye to our beloved Defenders (except for Iron Fist, good riddance.). This leaves Netflix with a much-needed win for some fresh intellectual property and The Umbrella Academy seems like a solid step in the right direction.

More from Netflix
- Bridgerton season 3: All the details to know about Penelope and Colin’s love story
- It’s a slow week on Netflix with only three new releases (Nov. 20)
- Exploding Kittens: From card game to Netflix animated series starring Tom Ellis
- The Crown and more Netflix shows and movies to stream this week (November 13)
- Escaping Twin Flames and more harrowing love-centered documentaries to watch on Netflix
The series will be comprised of 10 episodes that will all be an hour long each. So for viewers who get frustrated by overly long seasons, this might be the show just for you. The show has a pretty impressive cast including Ellen Page, Tom Hooper and singer/songwriter Mary J. Blige, who seems to be getting comfortable with stretching her talents as an actress.
The source material itself seems to have a clever premise which involves 43 infants being born through mysterious circumstances all at once. Long story short, a man adopts seven of these newborns, raises them, forms the Umbrella Academy with these gifted kids, then he dies. This results in the grown children coming together to solve the mystery of his death.
This show seems like the perfect marriage between X-Men and Harry Potter, with a blend of mystery that is hard to understand, and an enemy these grown children must now fight in order to save their world. It seems worth a watch for fans of the mystery and superhero genres. Viewers looking for a solid Netflix and chill night may want to check this out!
