5 reasons to watch The Umbrella Academy if you love Supernatural
As Supernatural fans, we have to go through Hellatus periods. They can seem to drag, so you may be looking for something else to watch. Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy is something you need to add to your list.
While you could watch endless reruns of Supernatural throughout Hellatus periods, consuming new and fresh content is good for you. Hellatus is the perfect time to give new shows a try and Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy is the show on the list to watch right now.
It’s perfect for all Supernatural fans. Based on a comic, this is a series about seven siblings who all have abilities. Well, all but one have developed abilities as children.
When their dad dies, the seven adopted siblings are brought together and it’s time for family secrets to be revealed. The question is whether all seven can come together as they figure out their secrets or whether they are destined to always be apart.
Not sure if this is a show for you? I’ve got five reasons why The Umbrella Academy is perfect for Supernatural fans. Young or old, this is a show that will have something that pulls you in. I’m not even much of a comic book adaptation fan and I found multiple things that I love.
5. It’s all about family
Let’s just start with the fact that this is a series all about family. It starts with one man adopted seven special children — the seven are part of 43 children born to mothers on the same day, at the exact same time. Usually, that wouldn’t be too out of the ordinary but the mothers weren’t pregnant when they started their days.

Jump forward 30 years later and we get to learn more about the seven siblings. After their dad dies, they’re brought back together and this is just the start of the issues. We soon learn what happened to two of the siblings (and why they’re no longer in a portrait) and we learn why one sibling, in particular, isn’t even in any of The Umbrella Academy portraits.
The series is all about the relationships between the siblings — or lack of relationship between some of them. It’s a chance to delve into how their father affects each of them and why some are more likely to drink and do drugs than others.
Bonds shift and relationships change as the siblings learn more about how they were as kids and what they are now. There are plenty of accidents, drama, and focus on rivalry.
If it’s the family element that pulls you into Supernatural, it’s going to pull you into The Umbrella Academy.
4. There are some excellent graphics and music
Okay, I’ll admit that there are times the green screening is bad, but most of the graphics are on point. If something you love about shows is how they make magic and effects look real, you’ll want to tune into this Netflix Original.
The Umbrella Academy is full of various graphics. The special powers of the siblings sometimes require it (such as one kid turning into an octopus!) and there are times that a whole freeze-frame is required. Without giving too much away, some of the siblings require ripples in the air when they use their powers, which requires intricate CGI.
This is more than just about the five siblings. A time initiative is pulled in, requiring more special effects. There’s the need to build up the powers and the abilities, showing different levels of effects throughout all eight episodes.
Then there’s the music. One of the things that I know pulls you into Supernatural is the music and The Umbrella Academy will do the same. It’s not the same music — sorry, no 80s rock throughout — but there is a good mixture for everyone. Almost every episode has a musical number (but nothing like a musical that is cheesy and annoying).
3. Secrets unfold with spectacular results
One of the things that pulls fans into Supernatural is the way the secrets unfold. It took us until Season 5 to learn some of the secrets. However, the first two seasons offered a slow burn that gave us the majority of the secrets.
We had the chance to learn about Sam’s abilities, the special children army, the Yellow-Eyed Demon, and various other creatures and monsters in the world. The secrets didn’t come as an info dump, which is extremely important in fiction. In some cases, we learned all about the secrets as the Winchester brothers did.

That’s something The Umbrella Academy offers. The premiere episode is a little slow at first but we get some of the bigger secrets and understanding by the end. It’s when the second episode starts that we get to learn more. We learn where Number Five has been, what’s happened to Number One, and why Number Seven is so different over the course of the first season.
Not all the secrets have unfolded yet. There are still plenty of questions and truths to be revealed. This is what makes the writing so good. It pulls you in, needing to understand more about this family — and a father that clearly loves his children but struggles to show it.
2. Each character is different
Whether you love the outsider, the son with abandonment issues, or the quirky character, there is something for you in The Umbrella Academy. Every single character has been written differently. There’s no way that you can get them confused.
And that means there will be a favorite for all. Personally, Number Four (Klaus) is my favorite, with Number Three (Allison) and Number One (Luther) close behind. I know there are others who will connect more with Number Five or even Number Two (Diego) and Number Seven (Vanya). It’s the beauty of the writing and that is sure to pull you in.
One of the great things about each of the characters is that they all have flaws. They can be egotistical, have high expectations of their fellow siblings, or even believe themselves to be smarter than the others. Each one has something unlikeable about them, but you can look past those elements because of their development throughout the series.
The only character who doesn’t yet get too much development is Number Six (Ben). You’ll understand the reason for that as you watch the series, but the second season promises more than that.
Speaking of the potential of The Umbrella Academy Season 2…
1. There’s a deeper story to explore
While the second season hasn’t been confirmed yet, there is hope for it. This is a show that has immediately gained high reviews (mostly for the music choices) and there’s a good reason for that. The storyline and writing are on point.
Like Supernatural, The Umbrella Academy has ended with a cliffhanger. It wants a second season and has opened itself up to so many questions. Just like when the Winchesters were involved in the car crash by a demon or when Lucifer was released from the cage, the season has left fans needing more.
And it’s not just the main storyline where there are lots of questions. There are still secrets to unfold. Time travel changes open plenty of questions. And there are side characters that you just know you want to know more about.
I can’t delve into what those questions are because they would lead to spoilers. This is a show you need to check out for yourself and you’ll see just why it’s on the list of shows to watch during Supernatural‘s Hellatus.
It’s worth remembering that the first season is all about stopping an impending apocalypse. Is it possible to prevent it? What could possibly go wrong? The siblings seem to be just as good as the Winchesters when it comes to apocalypses.
