Supernatural Season 5, Episode 14 took on another holiday-themed episode with a dark and bloody twist. It just so happened to fit in with the overall season, showing just how empty one of the Winchesters was inside.

After a Christmas episode, a Halloween episode, and a look at various pagan Gods, it’s was time to turn to Valentine’s Day. Supernatural Season 5, Episode 14 delivered a holiday-themed episode with a dark and bloody twist.

This twist happened to bring one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, allowing secrets to come to life. One of those secrets was something that maybe even Dean didn’t realize himself until he was told.

Time to meet Cupid

More from Supernatural

Since people started killing themselves in strange ways around Valentine’s Day, it’s soon clear that there’s a Cupid connection. The Winchesters learn that all the victims’ hearts have Enochian sigils on them. Castiel shares that the sign is that the two people were supposed to mate, which means a Cupid was involved and had gone rogue.

This is the first sign that there’s something bigger at play. When Dean doesn’t want to eat his burger, Castiel takes it. They also get Cupid to show himself.

Cupid, a lower-level angel, cherub third class, is a naked man who says hello with hugs — and nobody likes it at all! The Cherub shares that he’s just been following Heaven’s orders to match couples up — and Dean learns that John and Mary Winchester were put together under orders from Heaven to ensure the important things, like the brothers being born.

After the death of another victim, Sam checks out the details at the coroner’s office. He finds a demon with a briefcase and manages to get that briefcase, which was full of light. That light was the soul of a human, needed as a food source. Castiel realizes that Famine is in the area.

The idea of Famine

Castiel, who is eating another burger, explains that people go after the things they desire, whether it’s drugs, love, attention. Everyone has something they’re “starving” for. Castiel knows that his need for burgers is his vessel’s craving for red meat. Famine happens to need souls to survive.

The Winchesters need to get to Famine. Dean figures that they can cut off the ring and everything will go back to normal. Sam knows that he isn’t able to go as he’s already craving demon blood.

So, Dean handcuffs Sam to the motel bathroom and Castiel pushes a drawer in front of the door. The best way to find out where Famine is located is by waiting for demons to collect a human soul, which happens to be the coroner, who drank himself to death.

Sam has to fight a craving

While Dean and Castiel sit on their stakeout, with Castiel gorging himself on hamburgers, Sam is attacked by demons. Giving in to his craving, he drinks the blood of one of the demons and then knocks one unconscious.

It turns out that the demons were sent by Famine to make Sam give in to his craving. By the time Sam gets to Dean and Castiel, Cass has given in to Famine and is eating raw meat from the floor and Dean has learned he is dead inside — a stark realization that it feels like even Dean is only just learning and explains why he hasn’t given in to any cravings.

When Sam is offered all Famine’s demons, Sam refuses. He has the ability to exorcize all the demons at once, but Famine ends up consuming them so they can’t go to Hell. Sam tries to exorcize Famine, but that does work. Instead, Sam exorcizes all the demons that Famine had just eaten, destroying Famine.

With the case over, Sam does another spell in Bobby’s Panic Room to detox, while Dean tears up and turns to Heaven. He needs help.

And this was where we left the Winchesters for a mini-Hellatus in February 2010.
