Last Man Standing Season 7, Episode 19 featured teachable moments. Kyle and Eve were the teachers, but who were their students and what were their lessons?

Teachable moments were the theme in Last Man Standing Season 7, Episode 19. Surprisingly, none of them came from the former teacher Vanessa (Nancy Travis). Instead, Kyle (Christoph Sanders) and Eve (Kaitlyn Dever) were the teachers, though there were also nuggets of wisdom from Mike (Tim Allen) and Ryan (Jordan Masterson).

Tasked with teaching Sunday school, Mike shirked his responsibility and instead he went ice fishing. Kyle received the job, and he received some advice and assistance from Ryan. In his Sunday school lesson, Kyle taught a simple practical lesson about Noah’s ark. When Rev. Paul (Bill Engvall) contemplated retirement, Kyle further instructed him on how to find joy in his work.

Among the sisters, Eve became displeased at how Kristen (Amanda Fuller) and Mandy (Molly McCook) bossed Jen (Krista Marie Yu) around. Eve imparted some wisdom onto Jen, and Jen responded accordingly. Surprisingly, Jen acted very much like Eve, to even Eve’s surprise.

Now, let’s dive right in and see if we can’t learn something ourselves from these teachable moments.

Passion of Paul

Last Man Standing Season 7, Episode 19 was entitled “The Passion of Paul.” Rev. Paul informed Mike that he needed to teach Sunday school. Mike had his mindset on ice fishing, so what was his answer to Rev. Paul?

Mike’s Sunday school teacher replacement was Kyle. Kyle fretted about his message, but he received some solid wisdom from Ryan. Ryan told him to captivate his audience, not just bore them with a lecture. Ryan also offered to assist with sound effects.

The theme for Sunday school was about Noah’s ark. Ryan provided sound effects, but Kyle eloquently delivered his message. God flooded the world, yet He gave people the opportunity to begin anew. Although Ryan went overboard with the sound effects, Rev. Paul left Sunday school impressed by the simplicity and inspiration of Kyle’s message.

Mike later apologized for not fulfilling his obligation, but Rev. Paul was content. Kyle delivered a nice speech, the participants enjoyed it, and Rev. Paul contemplated retirement. He felt burned out, overwhelmed with the mundane tasks of being the minister. Mike understood, but he accepted Rev. Paul’s decision when Rev. Paul told him that he prayed about and he felt Kyle’s message served as the motivation to start something else.

Rev. Paul then joined Mike and Kyle ice fishing. When Mike headed back to the car for the booze, Kyle doled out some advice to Rev. Paul. Although Rev. Paul is passionate about preaching, he is burned out by his job. He needed to find an outlet, like Mike does with ice fishing, to rejuvenate himself to rediscover his love of ministry.

Rev. Paul commended Kyle on his Sunday school message, and he agreed with Kyle’s advice. He asked Kyle if he ever considered becoming a minister. Kyle fessed up that he considered it in the past.

While Kyle found his place at Outdoor Man earlier this season, perhaps the Last Man Standing writers will move Kyle into ministry so that he continues to grow into his own man rather than be in the shadows behind Mike, Ed (Hector Elizondo), and Chuck (Jonathan Adams), the latter two whom were vastly underutilized in this Last Man Standing episode.

The wisdom of Eve

Eve returned home for a short break, and she and her sisters, including Jen, enjoyed a movie night. Mandy envied Jen’s drink, and she asked Jen to make her one as well. Kristen then asked if Jen would make popcorn too. Jen agreed, and Eve recognized that Jen wanted to please her sisters. Eve confronted Jen about this, and hilarity ensued.

Eve convinced Jen to stand up for herself. The next time the girls wanted to do something together, Kristen offered up two Julia Roberts movies. Eve offered something else.

Moments where Last Man Standing connects to Tim Allen’s career, or in other episodes about The Tonight Show in relation to Jay Leno, are pure gold. Hector Elizondo and Nancy Travis also have solid careers, so maybe in the future Last Man Standing will give a nod to them.

Jen wanted to play cards. Mandy again envied Jen’s drink, but Jen declined to make her one. Kristen called Eve out on her lesson to Jen, but Kristen’s independence and Mandy’s ego led them to grab their own snacks and beverages. Eve was quite pleased, almost surprised at how Jen stood up to Kristen and Mandy.

So what were the lessons in this Last Man Standing episode? Kyle taught us to find the reason(s) for the enjoyment in our lives. As spring approaches, let’s eliminate our headaches about the menial parts of life and instead focus on what is important.

Ryan taught us some effective tools for public speaking. Connect with your audience, be confident in your abilities, speak from the heart, and keep your thoughts to a simple point.

Eve taught us that sometimes courage is necessary to ensure we’re treated fairly. While bravery may not always be applauded, in the end, you’ll gain respect, and you’ll be proud of yourself.

Being true to yourself is something which Jen struggles at, but when she acts herself, she can stand up to anyone. When she and Mike struggled to bond, she was honest, and he enjoyed her company far more as a result of it. She reminded us how sarcasm and determination help us get our way, but we should remain polite.

As the patriarch of Last Man Standing, Outdoor Man, and the Baxter family, Mike shared his teachings in his vlog. In essence, he reminded us that joy in our passions can be consumed if we make it our work. I reviewed this Last Man Standing episode, but I found time to watch March Madness.
