Episode 21 was the penultimate episode of Supernatural Season 5. As the Winchesters search for Pestilence, they come across Death. Well, Dean meets Death in Chicago for pizza.

Supernatural Season 5, Episode 21 gave us a meeting that we never expected. Dean finally met Death, and the meeting didn’t go as anybody expected. It’s time to delve into the episode titled “Two Minutes to Midnight.”

This was one of those episodes that pushed us forward for the finale of the season — an episode that was supposed to be the series finale at one point in time. Here’s a throwback to everything that happened when Death and Dean met for pizza in Chicago.

Taking care of Pestilence

More from Supernatural

The episode starts with Sam bringing up his plan to say yes to Lucifer. However, that conversation is cut short when Castiel calls to apologize for his previous actions. He is effectively human.

However, the focus is mostly on finding Pestilence. They need his and Death’s rings, and he seems like the easier one of the two. Finding out he’s at Serenity Valley Convalescent Home, the Winchesters head out where he’s infecting patients with multiple diseases and watching them die horrific deaths.

Pestilence learns that the Winchesters are there so activates his rings. Anyone close to him become extremely sick and that causes the Winchesters to become sick as they get closer to Pestilence. They both faint when they get to him.

Castiel makes it just in time — although Pestilence notes that he’s no longer a full angel — and manages to cut off Pestilence’s ring. Pestilence gets away and the Winchesters and Cass are able to return to Bobby’s.

Dean and Death share a pizza

Now it’s time for Death. Bobby has found that Death is in Chicago — and yes, Crowley got that information. Bobby sold his soul for the information, infuriating the Winchester brothers. However, the swine flu problem is more important.

Sure enough, we get Death’s epic introduction in Chicago in this episode. Death is ready for the spread of the swine flu vaccine, which is actually filled with the Croatoan virus.

Sam and Dean learn about Adam

Castiel has more bad news. Michael has got a vessel in the form of Adam. If Sam says yes to Lucifer and fails, then the apocalypse will happen. And for Sam to be able to overcome Lucifer, he’s going to need to consume a large amount of demon blood.

Sam and Castiel head into the warehouse where the vaccine is being distributed, saving as many people as possible and fighting off the infected people.

Getting the last ring

Dean and Crowley head to Chicago, where they finally find Death at a pizzeria. Dean gets Death’s scythe but did you really think it was going to be that easy to kill him? Of course not!

The scythe burns hot, forcing Dean to drop it. Death asks for Dean to join him at the table, where he has the chance to share that he predates God and will be around after God — reaping God himself.

Death also shares that he’s been bound to Lucifer magically and he doesn’t like that. So, as a loan, he offers his ring to Dean to trap Lucifer in the Cage. Dean needs to go through with it even if it’s Sam who is being possessed at the time. Reluctantly, Dean agrees.

The Winchesters, Castiel, and Bobby meet back at Bobby’s house. It’s now time to test the rings, which join together and create the key to opening the Cage. Now Bobby has a question: is Dean more afraid of losing the upcoming war or Sammy?
