Sansa Stark has been through one of the biggest transformations throughout Game of Thrones. Before beginning Season 8 this weekend, it’s time to take a look back at her journey.

When you look at the characters of Game of Thrones, the women have certainly been through some of the biggest transformations. Sansa Stark is at the top of the list, as she went from pawn in a plot to potential political mastermind. Her only downside right now is that she’s a woman, which means the majority of people around Westeros aren’t going to listen to her.

With Season 8 premiering on Sunday, it’s important to look back at how far the main characters have come. Sansa is the last on our list, getting us ready for the potential future that’s in store for her. How did she go from pawn to one of the smartest characters in the series?

If you’re not caught up to the end of Season 7, there are going to be spoilers in this post!

Sansa in the earlier seasons

When Sansa started her Game of Thrones, she was the proper lady, the girl with the dream to be a queen. Considering her upbringing, it wasn’t that surprising she had this view. She was raised to be a lady of the court.

Yet, while being raised as a lady, she was also a spoiled brat. She wanted everything her own way and would scream and cry if she didn’t get it. Throughout the first season, we watched her naivety, as she believed that she would become the next Queen of Westeros, next to Joffrey as her husband.

With the downfall of her father, Ned, she soon realized that nothing was going to work out the way she hoped and dreamed. A prisoner of King’s Landing, she found herself as a pawn. As the eldest Stark girl, she could be used as a way to gain power in the North.

As Winterfell was taken over and Robb Stark killed, it looked like Sansa was the only one left. Many believed that Bran and Rickon had been killed by Theon’s men and Arya was on the run somewhere. Tywin found a use for Sansa, deciding to tie his own family to the Starks to gain control of the north, marrying Sansa to Tyrion Lannister.

This marriage was one to embarrass both Tyrion and Sansa, but the two made the most of it. Sansa found herself with a husband who was kind to her. Despite tradition stating Tyrion and Sansa should consummate their marriage, Tyrion never slept with her. He didn’t want to unless Sansa definitely wanted this.
