The most realistic thing about Netflix’s Black Summer

There’s just something about apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic shows audiences love. The latest series to intrigue us is Netflix’s Black Summer, and it’s probably the most realistic of all zombie dramas. Here’s why.

Whether it’s a movie or show that follows an end-of-the-world scenario, we love to see how humanity struggles to survive an apocalyptic tragedy. Many times, there doesn’t even need to be any zombies, as long as the world as we know it is being destroyed and the story presented is interesting, we’ll likely watch. If you haven’t watched the Netflix Original series just yet, know that no big spoilers are ahead. We won’t discuss any major plot lines or characters. But we do tease something about the show you may not want to know. It won’t ruin the series for you at all, but if you want to go into the show not knowing a thing, stop reading now.

Black Summer follows various small groups of survivors as they try to make their way to a sanctuary after the world begins to get taken over by the undead. The zombies are frightening, more so than those on The Walking Dead. The undead on this series aren’t just hungry, they’re angry too. Hangry? They’re also fast and appear to be more clever than other zombies we’ve seen.

The acting, however, isn’t the best. But there’s still one big detail that is far more realistic than any other post-apocalyptic series or film we’ve seen: No one in Black Summer can shoot to save their lives. At all.

They all also seem to have a never-ending amount of bullets, but that’s another topic. What we’re focusing on is how frustrating it is to see the survivors attempt to kill the zombies. The bullets land everywhere, the undead’s legs, shoulders, stomach, neck, but almost never on the head. They did get shot in the head once or twice, but only after various attempts.

You’d think everyone be better at this, right? Wrong. In reality, this is exactly what would happen. Even if you have been trained, chances are you can’t hit a fast-moving target coming right at you straight in the head on the first or even second try. To be honest, I don’t think I could even shoot a still target.

As much as I found it frustrating and yelled at the TV, it makes sense and I’m glad the creators decided to do this. This isn’t The Walking Dead, where all the survivors are magically zombie slayers and kill their target on the first or second try.
