At the end of Supernatural Season 14, Episode 18, Castiel went to Heaven. We heard he saw John there, but which John was it?

Supernatural Season 14, Episode 18 saw Castiel go to Heaven, where he learned John was there. Now the big question is whether this was our John Winchester or a version of the character.

To look into the theories, we will need to share the ending of the episode and the reason Castiel was in Heaven. That means there are spoilers in this post. If you haven’t watched the episode, go do that or read our recap for “Absence” here.

If you’re still reading, you either know what happened or you don’t mind spoilers. So, let’s get into it.

More from Supernatural

Supernatural said goodbye to Mary during the episode. It was an emotionally-charged episode and we got the confirmation that Mary was definitely gone when Castiel went to Heaven. He was shown where Mary was, sharing with the brothers that she was with John.

Duma had mentioned she was in a special heaven. Putting it all together, it suggests that she is in Heaven with our John Winchester, that the two have finally made it to Heaven and are now together. After all, we learned in Season 5 that special heavens existed for soulmates and found out later that Jimmy and Amelia Novak had found each other in one.

It is certainly possible that John and Mary Winchester could have been given a special heaven together. They were soulmates, after all. We saw the love they had for each other when John returned in the 300th episode.

However, there’s one thing that makes me question if it’s really John Winchester and not a heaven version of him just for Mary. When Castiel opened the door, there was only one name on it. This was Mary’s heaven — with both her life spans listed under the name. John’s name wasn’t on the door.

If this was a heaven for the two together, surely both of their names would have been on that door. It’s unlikely that only one would have been listed, suggesting that either John was allowed to visit Mary or that it was just a memory.

We know that heavens are memories. It wouldn’t be surprising if this heaven was one of Mary’s memories with John, whether before or after their sons were born.

Also, Ash once said that he couldn’t find John or Mary in Heaven. This doesn’t mean that they weren’t there. Heaven will be a big place and he just may not have found them. He also couldn’t find Jo and Ellen in Heaven. It’s just something to consider.

I’d love for it to be the real John, though. Both Mary and John deserve to have a Heaven together and it would be good to know that John is in Heaven bringing closure to his storyline at the end of Season 2.
