What do you do when there’s a possible soulless nephilim out there? Apocalypse Bobby has his plans, while the Winchesters and Castiel deal with grief in an all-new Supernatural.

Supernatural Season 14, Episode 19 delivered another heart-wrenching episode. While the Winchesters and Castiel dealt with grief in their own ways, Apocalypse World Bobby turned up in need for revenge. It’s time to delve into everything that happened.

As you would expect, this is a Supernatural recap and that means spoilers. If you haven’t watched the episode yet, head over to the CW app and check it out.

It’s time for a hunter’s funeral

More from Supernatural

The episode opens with a funeral for Mary Winchester. This isn’t just for the brothers and Castiel. While the burning of the shell Jack brought back was for them, they got in touch with every hunter Mary knew — so, all the Apocalypse World hunters haven’t been killed after all! — to give them a chance to say goodbye.

That’s when Bobby shows up. He wants revenge against the creature that killed Mary, which means he wants to kill Jack. He doesn’t care if Jack was good once upon a time. Without his soul, Jack is dangerous and it’s all black and white for Bobby.

And Castiel worries for Jack, so while the Winchester brothers mourn in their own way — Sam trying to get Dean to talk and Dean needing to be alone — Castiel heads up to Heaven. He wants to see Naomi but she’s still not around. It turns out that she’s has a jail cell after the Empty broke in, so Duma is now in charge.

Duma does what she does best

With Castiel in Heaven, Duma learns all about the lack of soul. She promises to keep an eye out for Jack but she knows that she can use him for her own gain. And when she (very quickly) finds him, she tells him that the best way to get the Winchesters to be proud of him is to save the world.

Really, she gets him to purify the world of the “heretics,” those who speak against God. And Jack honestly believes he’s doing the right thing by turning a “heretic” into a pillar of salt like Lot’s wife.

After killing a few others, Duma takes Jack back to Heaven. She wants him to create angels but he can’t just create them out of thin air. The best way to do it is by turning human souls into angels. So, he sits in God’s chair and listens out for all the prayers.

That’s when he hears a small church asking to be helped to get to Heaven. They even agree to become angels, not realizing what angels really are!

Can the Winchesters stop Jack?

As Sam finds reports of people dying, Castiel realizes that all the deaths are mentioned in the Bible. It’s clear that the angels (and Jack) are up to something.

The trouble is finding Jack. One of Jack’s victims live through his ordeal, giving the Winchesters a chance to question him. When they realize that Jack continues, they know that they have to deal with Jack. How do they do it?

Dean knows that the only option is the Ma’lak box. However, it needs to be Jack’s choice and Dean suggests that they tell Jack that he only needs to stay in the box until they fix his soul. Sure, it can’t be done and it means lying, but it’s the best option Dean can think of.

Sam isn’t on board but Dean makes it clear they both need to agree to this. Plus, Sam has to be the one to lie because Dean can’t control himself after what happened to Mary. It’s an impossible ask but is there any other way?

Reluctantly, Sam agrees and prays to Jack. Meanwhile, Castiel sees Duma to talk to her about what she’s doing to Jack. When Duma threatens to stop Mary and John living in their own Heaven, Castiel decides to kill her.

In the bunker, Jack explains the “accident,” as he puts it, to the Winchester brothers. This is the chance for them to convince him to go into the Ma’lak box. And he agrees if it means giving the Winchesters time to get things to go back to the way they were before he lost his soul.

However, while in the box — and while Castiel is angry at Dean choosing to lock Jack in the box for eternity — Lucifer shows up and reminds Jack not to trust the Winchesters. Jack manages to use his powers to break out of the box.

That’s where we leave it for the Supernatural Season 14 finale next week!

Odds and ends:

  • There was a wraith at Mary’s funeral because Mary’s funeral wouldn’t be complete without one.
  • Dean really hasn’t changed all that much, with his fight or flight defense mechanism kicking in and I don’t begrudge the writers for that.
  • The only thing I dislike is that the plan was to keep him locked in forever. If it was Sam or Dean, they would have researched after initially locking him away.
  • Castiel certainly wasn’t impressed with the idea of locking Jack away forever.
