Game of Thrones Season 8: Who does Qyburn really want Bronn to kill?

Qyburn tasked Bronn with an impossible ask in Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 1. Is it possible that he’s actually hinting at Bronn killing a different Lannister?

Caution: Spoilers from Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 1, titled “Winterfell.”

We all know Qyburn is on Cersei Lannister’s side in Game of Thrones, right? It wasn’t that surprising in the Season 8 premiere that Qyburn tasked Bronn with killing two particular Lannisters. However, is it possible that the Master of Spies actually wants Bronn to kill someone else?

A theory floating around, and one that I wondered while watching, is that Qyburn actually offered the crossbow to kill Cersei Lannister. Wait, why would Qyburn want Bronn to kill the Lannister he supports? It all links back to Cersei’s lack of interest in helping the North fight the Night King.

Qyburn will know the dangers. He’ll know how close the army of the dead is thanks to his spies and he has this fascination with zombies and the dead. When it comes down to a fight between the living and the dead, he’ll know that Cersei doesn’t have a chance unless she sides with the North.

As Qyburn shared the news that the Night King had broken through the Wall, Cersei was happy. You could see a look of worry on Qyburn’s face. He wasn’t expecting for Cersei to be happy about the news and it concerns him.

While he may want the freedom to do his own experiments, he’ll also want to live. The last thing he’ll want is to become one of the Night King’s minions, so it wouldn’t be all that surprising to find out that he wants to side with the living.

Part of him will also know the loyalty Bronn has to the Lannister brothers. Bronn was ashamed not to be able to fight for Tyrion because of the promise of title and a castle. However, he developed a stronger bond with Jaime, even literally saving his life during the fight against Daenerys. Honestly, I’m surprised Bronn didn’t even go with Jaime.

Bronn may be a sell-sword, but he’s also a smart man who wants to live. He’ll know that Cersei is putting everyone in King’s Landing at risk. It wouldn’t be surprising if Qyburn gave Bronn the task to kill Jaime and Tyrion Lannister knowing that Bronn would choose to kill Cersei instead.

Whether he’d survive or not is another thing. When it comes to killing Cersei, I do believe Tyrion may be the one to do it. But that doesn’t mean Bronn won’t attempt Cersei’s assassination.
