Game of Thrones: How does the Night King have so many White Walkers?
The Night King’s army has grown considerably over the years of Game of Thrones. Just how did he have so many White Walkers in the last episode?
Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 2 brought us the beginning of the Battle of Winterfell. The Army of the Dead is there and it’s time to get ready for losses on both sides. While it’s still not clear if the Night King is there, it’s clear that he’s been busy. Just how are there so many White Walkers?
It’s easy to overlook the creation of White Walkers vs. the wights. While the wights are the dead brought back to life, the White Walkers are different. They’re babies turned into the icy dead by the Night King. This is something we need to go back to Game of Thrones Season 4 for.

Craster’s baby boys are given over to the Night King and the Night King turns the babies into White Walkers. Do they age the same way as humans? Possibly but judging by the number of White Walkers the Night King now has, I’m not entirely sure. This is a part of the show’s mythology that isn’t explained.
Even the books don’t go into the explanation. We never see the babies turned. Instead, the wives of Craster tell stories of the boys being turned into “Others” and that the babies’ brothers come after them to take them away.
This could mean that the Night King wants Little Sam. He is Gilly and Craster’s son, the one that got away. It’s possible that the Night King wants to claim this boy to join the fold, but Gilly and Samwell will fight to prevent that.
Not all the White Walkers may be Craster’s sons, though. While many will be Gilly’s half-brothers and cousins, there’s a chance that some belong to other Wildings. Do we really think that Craster was the only Wilding to make a deal with the icy devil?
Plus, the Night King has been busy along the way. Is there anything stopping him from turning other babies that he finds? Does something special need to happen, like offering them as a sacrifice? It’s possible that he just turns babies as he finds them. Again, it’s a part of the mythology that’s never been explained.
But that’s how he has so may White Walkers now.
