There are a couple of theories over what this could be. The first is that it’s Rhaegal. Sure, we saw him go down with an arrow through the nick and he hit the water, but we didn’t get any definite confirmation that the dragon was killed.
Euron says he’s sure Rhaegal was killed and Dany mentions that he shot one of her children out of the sky. However, at no point does she mention that Rhaegal was killed. This is Game of Thrones and we know deaths have to happen on screen or they don’t happen at all.
It would make sense for Euron to be surprised to see two dragons in the air. He thinks there’s only one dead. Keeping Rhaegal out of the picture up to this big reveal will make it even the more shocking for all. And we can assume that Rhaegal has been healing somewhere, which is why he wasn’t there with Drogon for the final scene of the last episode.
However, I do think Rhaegal is dead. The second theory for what Euron is surprised at in the Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 5 promo is that it’s Drogon. Now, Drogon on his own won’t surprise Euron, so there has to be something different about him. Could it be that he’s covered in armor?
Armoring him would definitely make sense. It protects him against the Scorpions, making it safer for him to be in the air.
Questions about the lack of armor around Drogon have certainly been around since 2017. Considering the risk, why wouldn’t she want to give her children armor?
It’s not surprising nobody has thought about armor up to this point and it’s not a plot point in the books. She may have thought the Night King’s shot was an anomaly since he was magical. Now that a human has taken him down, she’ll want to keep her last child safe.
Alternatively, he could just swoop in for a surprise attack or there could be other dragons from around the world that haven’t been touched on in the TV series. Whatever it is, Euron is worried.
