I’m talking the only major death in the whole episode. Yes, some Lannister soldiers were unfairly executed (prisoners of war should never be executed under the circumstances they were) but they weren’t exactly sad deaths. The one death that changed everything was Jon killing Daenerys.
We knew it had to happen after the massacre that Daenerys carried out in the previous episode, but that didn’t mean the moment wasn’t sad. However, Drogon made the moment all the more heartbreaking.
He sensed something had happened and flew up to the throne room to see Dany’s body on the floor. He was like a small child, nudging his mom to “wake up” and you could sense the fear, confusion, and sadness the only dragon left standing felt. And after the fear and confusion came the anger.
I’d expected him to attempt to burn Jon – putting the theory of whether he could be burned to the test – but instead he lashed out. Whether he meant to destroy the Iron Throne or not, he made it impossible for anyone to have the one thing Dany had always fought to gain.
He lashed out as a hurt child not understanding why his mother was the one to die after everything she did. After all, to him, Dany had done absolutely nothing wrong.
Looking at him as a child instead of just some weapon (because Drogon was never a weapon to Daenerys), it added another layer of hurt and sadness to this one moment. To see him carry her off to take her body far away from her killer made it clear that Dany always meant the world to him, even if he did sometimes act out – as all children do.
