Supernatural Season 6, Episode 1 recap: How does Sam get out of the cage?
At the end of the Supernatural Season 5 finale, we saw Sam go to the cage but somehow return. The Season 6 premiere gave us a look at what happened and why.
In the Supernatural Season 5 finale, we saw Sam somehow get out of the cage. With Dean living his apple pie life, it would take time to learn how Sam had escaped. However, the Supernatural Season 6 premiere delivered an episode with plenty of twists and turns.
Picking up a year after Sam sacrificed himself, we had a chance to see Dean living his life with Lisa and her son, Ben. It all looked normal to everyone else, but he would never escape the hunter lifestyle. A devil’s trap sat under the rug and he’d have a gun and holy water under his bed. Would he be ready for the return of his brother?

Once a hunter, always a hunter
One night, Dean is having beers with his neighbor, Sid. When leaving, he hears a screen and his hunter senses immediately pick up. He’s sure there’s something wrong, especially when he sees what seems like claw marks and blood on a wall. However, there’s nothing but pigeons there.
The next day, he notices the same claw marks on telephone poles close to his house and on his garage door. Inside, there’s sulfur. He’s sure there’s a problem so gets Lisa to take Ben to the movies so he can unpack his weapons from the trunk of the Impala, which has been sitting covered in the garage for the year.
As he’s unpacking his leather jacket and John’s Journal, he’s attacked by Azazel. However, Azazel is taken out by Sam, who drives a syringe in Dean’s chest.
How did Sam Winchester escape the cage?
When Dean wakes, he immediately believes he’s died. How else would Sam be there?
Well, Sam shows that he’s not a demon or a monster with the usual hunter tricks and that he’s certainly alive. He somehow escaped the cage and awoke in Stull Cemetery. When he tried to get in touch with Castiel, nobody answered his prayers.

Oh, and to top it off, Sam has been back for a year and never got in touch with Dean. Apparently, Sam wanted Dean to have a normal life.
Not crazy enough? Sam hasn’t been hunting alone. He’s been hanging out with Mary’s Campbell family members, Gwen, Christian, and Mark. And Samuel Campbell just happens to have come back from the dead. Nothing on Supernatural stays dead, remember.
What attacked Dean?
Sam explains that a djinn attacked Dean. These djinns are different to the ones that he and Dean faced in the past; however, they do want revenge for that djinn that was killed. Monsters still have connections, after all!
These djinns are slightly more dangerous. They attack with a poison that causes hallucinations and kills quickly. Another Campbell cousin, Johnny, is watching over Lisa and Ben, allowing Dean to go to Bobby’s for now. Yes, even Bobby knew that Sam was back, although Sam hasn’t talked about Hell with anyone and won’t even talk to Dean.
Understandably, Dean is angry. He’s spent a year grieving the loss of his brother. This was something he should have been told. Dean also needs to apologize to Lisa for the danger he’s put them in.
Back at Lisa’s, Dean realizes that his neighbors are being attacked. He rushes over but it’s all a trap by the djinn, who have wanted to kill Dean for his role in killing their father. Fortunately, Sam and Samuel are able to save Dean and they take one of the djinns, Brigitta, away.
In the end, Sam wants Dean to join him hunting. Dean needs to stay with Lisa and Ben, for now, to keep them safe, but Sam can take the Impala. Sam declines the Impala and takes off in his own car. The brothers remain separated. For now.
