It may have only been the NCIS Season 16 finale tonight but eyes are already on Season 17. The finale delivered a surprise twist with a certain heavily-missed character returning.

Caution: There are major spoilers for the NCIS Season 16 finale in this post. I urge you to watch the episode first.

NCIS may have been on the air for 16 years but it never gets old. The writers always have something up their sleeve and the Season 16 finale was no different. The ending gave us a major character return.

In a way, we’d hoped for this. During the season, we learned that Ziva had never died in the explosion in Israel. That plotline was introduced as a way to write Michael Weatherly’s character out, but we knew that there was something fishy. There was no way Ziva would be killed off-screen.

NCIS Season 16, Episode 13 saw Bishop learn that Ziva was actually alive. For the safety of the team, she’d asked that nobody else find out. However, it looks like someone may have and now the rest of the team is at risk. Well, Gibbs may be at risk.

It’s not clear exactly why Ziva is back but the very end of the NCIS Season 16 finale gave us our favorite Mossad back. She rushed down the stairs to Gibbs’ basement, telling him that he is in danger. She didn’t have a chance to explain why. Gibbs was too busy staring at her with a happy smile — finding out she’d died was heartbreaking for him.

Will Ziva return for NCIS Season 17? That’s not clear just yet but it’s highly anticipated. After all, why bring her for a 30-second clip to not show her again, especially when she has such an important message for Gibbs?

With any hope, this will also mean that Tony returns for an episode. Wouldn’t it be great to see Ziva and Tony finally reunite with their daughter?
