#3 “Welcome Baxter”

“Welcome Baxter” was the first episode for Last Man Standing on FOX. The network instantly reaped the benefits from its revival when 8 million people watched the Last Man Standing Season 7 premiere.

The first Last Man Standing scene on FOX encapsulated all that transpired over the past year surrounding the show.

Yes, we met Molly McCook and Jet Jurgensmeyer as Mandy and Boyd, respectively. Along with the humor of Kyle (Christoph Sanders) not recognizing his wife Mandy, Kyle debuted a new hairstyle. Like our comfort foods, we saw Mike (Tim Allen), Vanessa (Nancy Travis), Kristen (Amanda Fuller), Ryan (Jordan Masterson), Eve (Kaitlyn Dever), Ed (Hector Elizondo), and Chuck (Jonathan Adams). Last Man Standing was back!

“Welcome Baxter” dealt with all the division in families due to the political climate. Ryan was distraught about the whole situation, and he needed a new purpose in life. Mike instructed Ryan to take control of his life and his family. Ryan decided to move his family to Canada. He is a Canadian citizen after all.

Meanwhile, Mandy and Eve continuously insulted each other, furthering the division in the Baxter house. Upset about all the anger, disliking the notion of moving to Canada, and feeling like everything was broken, Boyd ran away to Outdoor Man. Mike calmed him down, promising that despite the tension in families, school, and the country, there is always time to fix things.

Boyd returned home, and Mike found another way for Ryan to make a difference without moving to Canada. Become a United States citizen so he can vote and actively voice his opinions. Mike also smoothed out the relationship of Mandy and Eve.

If you’re like me, politics is a touchy subject. There are so many people on both extreme sides of the political spectrum that conversations about politics end up in arguing rather than discussion. As a result, we either end up with hurt feelings, damaged relationships, or we avoid talking about politics altogether. At the end of the day though, nothing has been done to fix anything.

Last Man Standing was known as a show unafraid to discuss and or joke about politics. Mike used his vlogs for that very purpose. When Last Man Standing returned, it stayed true to its roots. It didn’t venture away from trending topics. It dove headfirst into dealing with them. What it presented to us was there is common ground among us.

“Welcome Baxter” made Last Man Standing’s presence felt, and it dealt with something relevant for countless Americans. We laughed, we learned, and we greatly enjoyed watching its premiere on FOX.
