It’s Hellatus, which means Supernatural fans everywhere are looking for ways to spend the time. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina on Netflix could be the perfect option for you.

During Hellatus, you likely watch a lot of other TV shows. You want to see what other writers and showrunners can offer but something that connects to Supernatural in some sort of way. Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is certainly something the SPN Family should consider.

More from Supernatural

I’ll admit that I didn’t highly rate the first half of the season. But I gave the second half of the season a chance, wanting to see a resolution to a few storylines. And I’m certainly glad I did. Why is it perfect for many Supernatural fans? Here are my top reasons to watch it purely as a member of the SPN Family (there are many other reasons to watch it just for the show).

5. It’s got a Lucifer storyline

We didn’t know it at first – and I don’t think Eric Kripke did either – but Supernatural was all about the Biblical apocalypse. The fifth season focused on the growing war between Heaven and Hell, a war between Michael and Lucifer. From there, we’ve delved deeper into Biblical mythology, especially when it comes to Lucifer and the angels.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina includes a Lucifer storyline. I won’t share exactly what it is because of spoilers, but I will say that it makes it worth a watch for the SPN Family. It’s not the exact same Lucifer storyline but there are plenty of names you’ll recognize, including Lilith.

The witches in the series are Satanists. After a while, the mentions of The Dark Lord and replacing “heaven” in sentences with “hell” can get a little annoying and eye-rolley, but it keeps the focus on who the witches follow and how they were created.

4. It has plenty of supernatural elements

It’s not all about Lucifer, either. There are other supernatural elements to the story. After all, this is a show about witches!

There’s demon possession, ghosts, psychics, and so much more. If you loved The Vampire Diaries to get through Supernatural breaks, then this will definitely appease you. The small-town feel with “founding family-like” elements will make you think of Mystic Falls.

However, we know that the Winchesters have been to these similar towns. You’ll get a sense of the series within the woods and ghostly settings.

3. There’s a decent cast

It’s often all about the casting. A show needs not just good actors but the right actors to take on various roles. While not all characters are perfect – but no show has that and we’ll all disagree on who we think is the best character on a show – the casting is excellent.

Miranda Otto slays it as Aunt Zelda. While I didn’t like the character at first, she grew on me in the second half of the first season. Lucy Davis is excellent as Aunt Hilda, bringing in the fun, comedy relief needed for shows that tend to be supernatural and devasting-consequences heavy.

When it comes to villains and sort of villains, you can’t get better than Richard Coyle and Michelle Gomez. The two are excellent as Father Blackwood and Mary Wardwell, delivering complexity (and sometimes annoyance) to their characters. There are elements of them that will remind you of the many villains and sort of villains on Supernatural.

Of course, this type of show has to have a good actress in the lead role. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina cast Kiernan Shipka in the role and she most definitely doesn’t disappoint. One thing I worried about was having a bratty teen, but the teenagers in this show are anything but.

2. Beautiful visual effects

A show like this needs to have the visual effects on point. We’ve seen over the years how Supernatural has grown with the years and tech advances. There have been moments when the fog spreads just right and adds to the eerie feeling, or how elements glow in the dark to draw you in or there’s nothing, leaving you on tenterhooks.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina offers that same bonus. It’s a work of art when you watch how the visual effects come together and constantly make you feel like you’re in different places or times.

There are different worlds that are filmed in the same location but need to offer different views. Sabrina makes it clear where the characters are right away.

1. It’s got the mixture of story-arc and monster-of-the-week episodes

One of the things that draws us into Supernatural is the mixture of procedural and serialized episodes. The first season had an overall story arc that was mentioned now and then. The odd episode developed that story arc until the fourth season when it was mostly serialized. However, there were plenty monster-of-the-week episodes, allowing the characters to develop further.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina offers the same setup. You know there’s a bigger storyline but there are plenty of procedural episodes to the story. They all help to develop various characters, get to know the side characters, and even get to know more about the witches and warlocks.

Each episode has a place. You’re drawn in from the storytelling. You’ll certainly want to check it out if you like these types of storylines written.
