How many cool pop-culture references, funny quotes, and what the $*#% moments did we see in the season premiere of Archer: 1999?

The new season of Archer titled Archer: 1999, continues the show’s trend of adapting various genres to Archer’s unique animation style and adding the cast of characters we’ve loved over the last nine seasons. There’s been Dreamland, a noir mystery season, and Danger Island, an adventure in the mold of old Indiana Jones movies (with Sterling playing the titular Jones character with a higher BAC).

More from FX

This season focuses on a sci-fi adventure modeled after the Alien movies and promises a lot of unique relationships between the regular cast.

Archer and Lana are divorced, space-faring explorers; Mallory is “Mother” a sentient, computerized monitor of the crew; Pam is a gigantic, alien monster who looks like a cross between the Thing and the Hulk; Ray can walk and is a courtesan (very obviously modeled after Firefly‘s Inara); and Pam and Krieger are crazy again (Krieger is thankfully back in a human, rather than a parrot body).

This show is known for incredible references as well as ridiculously outrageous gags. Tonight, we’ll take a look at all the best moments from the first episode of Archer: 1999 along with its funniest quotes.

The intro

The new intro is just so dope, with its synth riff on the classic Archer theme song, the futuristic text, and pistols replaced with space blasters. Of course, it still has those familiar transitions, bright colors, and some references to their space-faring adventure.

Archer and Lana

Archer reveals that Lana owns half of their ship because of his “s****y divorce lawyer.” Lana’s response that she should have just waited for Archer to get killed by one of the various space bandits he owes money to so she would get the whole ship, is so classicly indicative of their on-again, off again relationship.

Even when Lana, later, asks if Archer is “happy” now that he’s exposed their ship to an external contaminant he responds with pure petulance. “I mean, I’m happy you’re not.” This is 100% on key with Archer after a divorce and it just feels great to have them all back in a (somewhat) normal relationship.

Archer continues to irritate Lana with his antics, such as firing the thrusters early and responding to her question if that ever gets old, “unlike some people.” He also relishes in overruling Lana, such as when she advises against their taking new crew member, Gort, to his home planet to get a sizeable reward.

Of course, when this decision leads to the crew being pursued by a gang of fighters, Lana can’t help but ruminate on all the ways that Archer is a “dumba**.” And finally, when they are eventually captured, she just has to get one more dig in about whether his brash, reckless decision was worth it.

Archer seems somewhat remorseful, but he does take pleasure in the fact that right now he’s happier than he will be very soon as he’s having his bones ripped out. This does give a window for our first “phrasing” from Pam, but “space phrasing” just doesn’t have the same feel to it.
