The best WTF moments and quotes from Archer: 1999, Episode 2
By Josh Tyler
We got gladiator fights and a terrifying mechanical bird named Funbeak on last night’s Archer, but what were the strangest moments from Episode 2?
On last week’s episode of Archer, the crew of the Seamus (yes I missed in Episode 1 that the spaceship was named after Sterling’s “son”) was tricked by a blob being named Bort into being captured by the villainous Barry-6 (again, not to be confused with Other Barry-6). With a vendetta against Archer and planning to sell the rest of the crew into slavery, Barry-6 clearly has no sympathy for the gang.
How did the crew weasel their way out of this one, and what were the funniest moments from Episode 2, “Happy Bortday”?
The opening
The opening scene of the episode is just sheer brilliance. It starts with some finger-pointing between Mallory and Lana about who is to blame for their current predicament. As usual, the other minions (Cyril, Carol/Cheryl, and Pam) all get irate at each other, shouting and demanding each other stop shouting at each other. This is punctuated by Krieger, loudest of them all, screaming “I think we can benefit from not yelling!”

Not missing a beat, Mallory responds with “the only thing you could benefit from is an EMP.” This is a not-so-subtle jab at Krieger being a robot and thus would be shut down by an EMP. Krieger takes this to heart with human-like shock. “Not even as a joke,” he responds.
Funbeak
In this episode, we’re introduced to the not-so-aptly-named Funbeak. He’s a psychotic robotic bird (like a hybrid of a peacock and ostrich) that is sent by Barry-6 to torture Archer.
His robotic voice issuing threats while torturing Sterling was pure gold, especially when every line is punctuated by a metallic “baw-kaw.” Unfortunately for him, though, Mallory (who isn’t a real person in this version of Archer, just an AI projection) is able to take over Funbeak’s metal body, free her son, and help the rest of the gang escape. “Aw, Beakly” I’m sure Krieger said when they leave Funbeak’s metal body behind.
