Hidden Remote: Can you share a little about Elspeth, who she is and what background you know that you can tell us?
Haine: Elspeth is a witch attending the Academy of The Dark Arts. She’s usually found kickin’ it with Melvin (Tyler Cotton), who’s another new face you’ll see this season, or talking to Sabrina and Nick about witches 2.0.
HR: We’ve seen her die, be resurrected, thrown into a dungeon, almost killed again. These are all traumatic events. Will there be a chance to explore the aftermath for her in the future if you can share?
Haine: I asked a magic eight ball and it said “try again later”. Perhaps Elspeth will come back with a goth streak. I do know Part 3 is going to kick off with a bang!
“Sabrina is like unto a God.” “Let’s go to hell and get my boyfriend back.” We’re dealing with major power yielding and the notion of eternal damnation! Yeehaw.
HR: What would you like to see from Elspeth in the future should there be a chance to delve more into her?
Haine: I want to explore her magicks.
HR: Where did you gain inspiration for the character? How did you get your mind into who this witch was?
Haine: Behavior reveals everything with this character. She chose death rather than recite the gospel of the missionaries so we know she’s resilient. She also defies Father Blackwood and attempts to find Sabrina to stage a revolt against the Church of Judas. She’s an independent thinker, a feminist, and her alliance with Sabrina has given her even greater strength to speak her truth. I’d say she’s a rebel.
HR: Is there anything you would have liked to have seen explored in your appearances in Part 2? Anything that was filmed that didn’t make the cut?
Haine: There was one DJ move I did during the Spellman house party where I scratched the record, span 360, then scratched again. Melvin and I got well into it.
HR: What were your thoughts when reading the scripts and seeing how much she was going to go through? How did you prepare for all that?
Haine: When you see the turmoil Roz goes through with becoming blind or the emotional torture Ms. Wardwell faces by Satan’s hand, no one is getting away unscathed. The preparation itself varies depending on the dynamics of the scene. When I get my throat slit I am irreverent.
When I’m sentenced to prison to be starved to death I imagine saying goodbye to everyone that I love, and what I love about them specifically, my mother’s voice and my best friend’s laugh. It’s tragic but considering that pain is part of why I love my job.
HR: What’s next for you as an actress? Do you have any upcoming projects you can share?
Haine: I feel so lucky to play a part in the new one off mini-series based on the infamous and historical tainted blood scandal called Unspeakable. To stream it, hop on over to SundanceTV.com in America and CBC GEM in Canada.
