Did Jessica Jones Season 3 pull a Game of Thrones move?

Jessica Jones Season 3 premiered over the weekend and brought with it the untimely death of the Netflix-Marvel Universe. But did it leave audiences satisfied?

The first season of Jessica Jones was a refreshing addition not only to the Netflix roster, but the TV world. Season 2, despite being certified fresh with critics, didn’t hit as high with audiences. So when it was announced that Season 3 would be the final chapter for our favorite P.I. and the end of the Netflix-Marvel Universe, our expectations grew even more.

Did Jessica Jones Season 3 live up to its expectations? Does it gift fans with any cameos or references? And how does it pull a Game of Thrones move on audiences? Spoilers ahead if you are not caught up on the series!

The third season of Jessica Jones introduces new players, none of which are memorable, including the villain, Gregory Salinger (Jeremy Bobb). They simply don’t make villains like Kilgrave anymore! Salinger is a serial killer who Jessica Jones learns about through her new pal Erik (Benjamin Walker). Jess sets out to stop Salinger, but the sinister man proves to be an intelligent opponent and even makes this fight personal by attacking those Jess loves the most.

In the comics, Salinger does appear (as Foolkiller), but he faces up against Trish Walker aka Hellcat and not Jessica Jones. In fact, the Salinger in the Netflix series only shares a few similarities to the original character.

The final episodes of Jessica Jones Season 3 focus on Trish Walker, as Jessica struggles to decide what to do with her best friend now that she’s become a villain. This is something not all fans of the series saw coming. Trish Walker aka Patsy aka Hellcat aka Jessica’s moral compass whose only desire was to help others…is bad?

Does this remind anyone else of Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen aka Mother of Dragons aka Breaker of Chains aka …you know the rest, who turned into the biggest villain in the series? Because, burning innocent lives, including children, for no reason whatsoever, gets you the title of the worst person ever.

Like Daenerys, though, did we see Trish’s story coming? You should have, but Jessica Jones did a good job trying to cover that. When you think about it, Trish’s desire to be a hero was never “cute” or inspirational, it was disturbing.

Why couldn’t Trish just do good with what she had? Instead, she submitted herself to tests in order to have a small chance of obtaining powers. Jess tells Trish that her first clue should have been when Trish killed Jess’ mother, the look in Trish’s eyes gave it away. It doesn’t matter what Jess’ mother did, it was not Trish’s place to kill her.

When Trish finally possessed powers, even that wasn’t enough. She wanted and needed attention, so she called the paparazzi on herself. Who does that?

In a scene, Trish asks Jessica “are you a hero if no one else knows you are?” Jess replies that she doesn’t care what people think, the proper reply from someone who is completely selfless, but Trish was talking about herself, who feels no worth in what she’s doing if no one knows about it.

Trish enjoys being the judge, jury, and executioner, and that’s not how true heroes do it. In the end, Jessica gets Trish arrested and sent to the Raft, a prison for powered people. Jessica Jones may not have been able to do it without Luke Cage (the only Netflix-Marvel cameo) appearing in the final episode and advising her that the right move isn’t always easy.
