Meg needs information
While Sam and Dean argue about their continued offer of monsters to Crowley, they’re attacked by demons. When they come to, they realize that Meg is the one who’s abducted them, wanting to know where Crowley is. And yes, she definitely needs them so Sam knows that she won’t kill them.
It turns out those who are loyal to Lucifer are on the run from Crowley. He wants to rule over Hell without a fight and he’s hunting down the Lucifer loyalists to do that. So, Meg wants to kill Crowley.
Sam offers to make a deal. He and his brother will help her get to Crowley so she can kill them. She will need to get information out of him. Sam doesn’t share exactly what it is but Dean knows it’s to get info about his soul.
However, they need help and that’s in the form of Castiel. After Sam tricks Castiel with the Raiders of the Lost Ark storyline to come down, Castiel makes it clear that he’s too busy to help. So, Sam decides to threaten with killing Castiel, which eventually gets Cass to yield and help.

A promise broken
The three men head to the Campbell Compound in an effort to locate Crowley. Samuel is there, who finally admits that Crowley offered to bring Mary back from the dead if Samuel helped him. Dean knows that it’s a bad idea to bring Mary back from the dead. Of course, he’s a hypocrite but he’s also right.
Eventually, Samuel agrees to help find Crowley. With Crowley’s makeshift prison located, Sam, Dean, and Castiel meet up with Meg to get to Crowley. However, this is when Castiel shares that Sam’s soul has been locked up with Michael and Lucifer in the Cage for a year. That torture will have an affect if the soul is returned to Sam’s body. Sam overhears everything that Castiel tells Dean. Oops!
Inside the prison, the group sees various monsters and creatures that Crowley has captured and imprisoned. The Hellhounds guarding the prison attack, and Meg offers to fight them off while the others get to Crowley. She gives up Ruby’s knife but takes Castiel’s angel blade — with a passionate kiss — to give her something that will take on the dogs.
It was all a trap, though. Samuel banishes Castiel with the angel banishing sigil and allows his grandsons to be taken by demons. With a promise of killing Samuel, Dean is taken to a room of ghouls to be fed. Fortunately, Sam is kept in a prison cell and manages to break free and help Dean kill the ghouls and break free.
Saving a demon
In all this mess, Meg has been captured and is now being tortured by Christian, who remains possessed by a demon. Dean now has the chance to sneak up behind Christian and kill him with Ruby’s knife. The Winchester brothers break Meg free and lure Crowley into a room, catching him in a devil’s trap.
This is a chance to demand Sam’s soul back, but under torture, Crowley admits that he can’t get Sam’s soul back. Even if he could, the soul has been tortured for more than a century in Hell’s timeline and getting it back will destroy Sam.
Dean gives Meg the demon-killing knife so Meg can kill Crowley, but Crowley is one step ahead. He manages to get the knife from Ruby and scratches the devil’s trap to get out. Just as he’s about to kill everyone, Castiel turns up with a bag of bones, supposedly belonging to Crowley.
After Crowley admits again that he can’t get Sam’s soul back, Castiel burns the bag and kills Crowley. Meg has a chance to flee.
With everything said and done, Castiel admits that the war in Heaven isn’t going well but that he will keep finding a way to get Sam’s soul back. First he needs to help the monsters in the prison cells. However, Sam isn’t sure he even wants his soul back after everything he’s learned.
