Katherine Heigl’s TV comeback wisely continues with Firefly Lane on Netflix
By Reed Gaudens
Emmy winner Katherine Heigl continues her TV comeback with Netflix’s adaptation of Firefly Lane, a perfect vehicle for the star.
Never underestimate Katherine Heigl. Despite catching her fair share of negative press over the years, the Emmy winner has proven her persistence, perseverance, and power of the comeback as she dusted herself off and made high-profile returns to television. Once again, the erstwhile Izzie Stevens triumphantly comes back to the small screen, but this time it’s on Netflix — and it just might her wisest, splashiest move for a second act yet.
According to TV Line, Heigl will headline and executive produce Netflix’s 10-episode adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s bestseller Firefly Lane. The series will follow a pair of best friends, the other of which has not currently been cast, through four decades as their bond complicates year by year. Heigl stars as Tully Hart, a journalist and talk show host haunted by loneliness and the aftershocks of a traumatic childhood, who finds solace in her best friend Kate. For years, Heigl has been shadowed by comments and misunderstandings that drew headlines over a decade ago. But her two-season run on Suits and a shift in the industry’s attitude finally appear to have parted those dark clouds. There’s no reason why Katherine Heigl shouldn’t be granted the opportunity to shine once more, especially in what sounds like a wonderful slice of prestigious Netflix content that she’s more than earned.
What’s more, Heigl’s in a position of power as one of Firefly Lane’s executive producers. Behind the scenes, she’s accompanied by fellow executive producers Stephanie Germain and Lee Rose, co-executive producer and author Kristin Hannah, and writer/showrunner Maggie Friedman, who helmed Eastwick and Witches of East End and most recently worked on The CW’s No Tomorrow.
Without question, Firefly Lane sounds like a smart comeback move for Heigl by all accounts and could even warrant a long-awaited return to the Emmys. She shouldn’t have to remind the world of her talent, but the adaptation of the best-selling novel stands as the right vehicle for Heigl to flex her acting chops and refresh the memories of the fans that fell in love with her in Grey’s Anatomy or even Roswell. At the very least, the potential is exciting, and we want to see her win.
Of course, Heigl’s post-Grey’s film career took an objective dip after the market turned away from romantic comedies. She notably starred in the hit films Knocked Up, 27 Dresses, and The Ugly Truth. Following a string of box office misses, Heigl returned to television in 2014 for NBC’s one-and-done political thriller State of Affairs, then again in 2016 for CBS’ short-lived legal drama Doubt.
The star later found renewed television success when she joined the cast of USA Network’s Suits in its eighth season and starred through its ninth and final season this summer. Heigl’s addition to the cast has earned rave reviews, surely helping to rewrite her narrative and bring her to the next stage of her well-deserved resurgence. Let the Heigl-ssance commence!
