The Handmaid’s Tale has done a number on June over the years. She’s starting to crack. Is this the beginning of the end for our protagonist?

June has been our protagonist from the very beginning of The Handmaid’s Tale. Slowly, we’ve seen her become a part of the resistance and attempt to escape. Gilead has certainly done a number on her and she’s starting to crack. Is this the beginning of the end for her?

There’s only so much one handmaid can get away with, right? June has certainly got away with plenty more than any others. She’s willing to push boundaries considerably and eventually, it has to give. That time seems about now, especially if the promo for the next episode is anything to judge.

More from Hulu

In the promo for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3, Episode 9, June is stuck in the hospital. She’s not allowed to go home until her walking partner goes home, which means months of waiting. At one point, she looks ready to kill Serena Joy, which isn’t all that surprising considering everything Serena Joy has started doing since seeing Nichole.

This scene is going to go one of two possible ways. Either June realizes there’s no point in trying to kill her or she’s too weak from the sitting and waiting that she fails. But even if she attempts, won’t Serena end up telling someone? Serena wants to get rid of June to get Nichole back. Surely having her put on the wall would be good enough.

If this was the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, I’d say that it would be possible to see June completely crumble from her time in Gilead. However, I get the feeling this isn’t the end. It’s one of Hulu’s most talked-about shows. While we don’t get the Nielsen ratings because The Handmaid’s Tale doesn’t air on live TV, it’s not hard to imagine how popular this show remains, especially in this current political climate.

I think June will make it out of this season alive. She’s on a downward spiral right now, but she needs to hit a bottom to figure out what she needs to do next. Right now, both her children are gone. Hannah has been moved out of the district and there’s a chance that Nichole may not be safe in Canada after all. It would be enough to break any mother, so her downward spiral makes sense.

However, I think she’s going to find a renewed purpose. Something is going to give her the strength to change her mind about killing everyone she can and then she’ll be able to start some sort of path of redemption — if redemption is even possible at this point.
