The movie Ghostbusters 2020 has officially started filming and the set picture may have some clues as to what the film will be about.

Just months after the official teaser hit the internet, we can finally say that Ghostbusters 2020 is officially filming! Ghostbusters 2020 is the third installment to the original Ghostbuster movies and will be directed and co-written by Jason Reitman, who is the son of the director of the original film. The highly anticipated movie became a reality when Reitman confirmed that the movie is finally in production by posting a set picture of himself, Ivan Reitman, and the cast on his twitter account.

The photo features actors Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard holding a clapperboard with the film name Rust City. Rust City is the movie’s production alias so as not to attract so much attention while filming. The caption on the picture proudly announces that “The family is all here” followed by the Ghostbusters hashtag. But the best part about the photo is that it lends some credibility to some interesting theories about the movie.

What we know so far about the new Ghostbusters film started with the first trailer released last January. The short clip showed a retired Ecto-1 parked in a barn under a billowing tarp on a stormy night. The bonus is that someone in the barn was struggling to turn on a proton pack.

Shortly after the trailer dropped, We Got This Covered reported that a “trusted source” had the in on the main plot of the movie. Allegedly, the plot follows a family that has moved back to their hometown, where they will discover many secrets. They claimed that the main characters were a teenage boy who is into fantasy and becomes friends with a young girl who is a science whiz.

There were also rumors that suggested that this family has moved into the house of a former Ghostbuster since Ecto-1 is parked in their barn and the Ghostbuster equipment is being stored in the house. Most fans have speculated that the house could belong to Egon Spengler.

Harold Ramis, who played Spengler in Ghostbusters 1 & 2, passed away in 2014. So it’s probable that Spengler’s story would incorporate a reason for him not to be in the film and for his family to move into his former home.

Reitman’s latest set pic has fans guessing that Grace could be the daughter (or granddaughter) of Egon Spengler because of her glasses and resemblance. But if the original rumors are correct, then Wolfhard could also be the teenager with a love for fantasy that discovers Ecto-1 and the Ghostbusters proton packs. And since this stuff has been probably lying around for many years, he’ll need the help of the science wiz (Grace’s character) to revitalize the old Ghostbuster equipment in hopes of capturing the ghosts that are lurking in their new town.

We can also deduce that at some point the original Ghostbusters will have to get in on the action seeing that Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, and Ernie Hudson will be in the movie. Sigourney Weaver will also be reprising her role as Peter Venkman’s main squeeze and Annie Potts will return as the former secretary.

And we can expect Paul Rudman to make an appearance in an unknown role. All in all, Ghostbusters 2020 is turning out to be an exciting new story with the nostalgia of the originals.
