SDCC: What happens in HBO’s Watchmen Experience with augmented-reality?

HBO’s Watchmen Experience at SDCC transforms you into Dr. Manhattan and leaves you with two amazing souvenirs.

Compared to the Game of Thrones and Westworld activations from past years at SDCC, there’s no question that HBO has decreased their presence in 2019. The Watchmen experience is an off-site on many attendees’ lists, but is the experience worth the wait?

What makes this off-site experience for Watchmen different is that rather than enter with a group, only one person is allowed entry at a time at about two minutes per person. Upon entering an Intrinsic Field Subtractor, you’re instructed to stand in front of a camera that calibrates your body. If it can’t capture your image right away, it may ask you to shuffle backward and forward until it’s able to track your measurements.

More from HBO

Once you’ve been calibrated, an image appears on a vertical screen showing the Intrinsic Field Subtractor in action! It appears that you’re struck by lightning bolts and then you’re recreated from skull and bones, adding muscle, then slowly turning into your own personal version of Doctor Manhattan.

There is no print out of the image, but you are sent a downloadable video ready to be posted on social media that features a border with the Watchmen logo. But for many, the best part is the custom Watchmen enamel pin set that you receive after completing the transformation.

HBO’s Watchmen Experience is establishing a presence at two different locations for SDCC this year: Petco Park Home Plate Gate (at Gwynn Drive & Hoffman Way), and the corner of Sixth Avenue and Island Avenue. Both will be open from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday during SDCC. We hope this means both lines will be shorter throughout the weekend!
