Veronica Mars spoiler-free review: Perfect for fans old and new
Veronica Mars dropped on Hulu a week early. Here’s a look at what to expect from the season. Whether you watched the series when it first aired or are new to it, you’ll love this season.
There have been many reboots and revivals over the years. Some have been asked for and some certainly haven’t. Veronica Mars has been a revival fans have wanted ever since the series was unfairly canceled in 2006. But would the show still have the same oomph more than 20 years later?
Veronica Mars Season 4 dropped on Hulu a week earlier than anticipated. While I’m still in two minds about whether that was a good thing or not (people have gone out of their way to purposely and rudely spoil the ending for many!), one thing I do know is that the fourth season is everything I wanted and more.

I’m not going to spoil plot points for you in this post. Eventually, I’ll answer a few questions, such as who the bomber is. But I want you to have a chance to watch the series first. I want you to know what to expect in a teasery way without ruining the ending and the various twists along the way.
One of the things I adored about the Veronica Mars revival is that anyone can watch it. Whether you’re all caught up with the last three seasons or you’re starting this anew, it’s not actually going to matter. There’s the odd mention of things that happened in the past, but nothing that leaves you scratching your head with confusion. So, if you didn’t quite catch up before the season dropped, don’t worry about jumping ahead!
Another thing I love is the opening credits. The theme music is the same, but there’s a slightly more adult feel to the opening credits. They suit the tone of the show.
Speaking of adult, there is a little more language in this than you’d have been used to when the show aired on UPN and The CW. However, the F-bomb doesn’t exist but the show’s writers have certainly got around it. While The Good Place uses “fork,” Veronica Mars has it’s own and it’s brilliant. This is one that I’d want you to find out for yourself while watching, so I’m not going to tell you what it is in this review.
Overall, while slightly more adult, the tone of the show is the same. It’s the same old Veronica Mars, who is now a P.I. with her former-sheriff father. They’re not doing spectacularly well, and that adds to the realism within the show. And Veronica isn’t ashamed to add extras to her bill for clients when she finds out they’re loaded. I don’t really blame her!
Logan has matured and grown as a person. This was a character I didn’t fully like throughout Veronica Mars, but I love the new and improved version. Some hints of jealousy are still there now and again, but nothing too bad that leaves me screaming at the TV screen.
And then there’s Veronica’s dad, Keith. Nothing has changed here, except for his health. His health problems take a major focus throughout the eight episodes, giving us a chance to see Veronica in a vulnerable way. What would she do if the two most important people in her life weren’t there anymore? She tells you that in Episode 5!
Veronica Mars Season 4 works well with the shorter season. Eight episodes is enough to continue the bombing storyline, leading you through a couple of twisty storylines that interconnect. There’s a Mexican cartel looking for revenge, a family looking for what they think is rightfully theirs, and another family who just wants answers. Veronica, Logan, and Keith are thrown into these storylines, and it’s not easy when the police don’t want to share information and there’s another set of detective-wannabes making statements without proof.
For fans of the original Veronica Mars, it’s exactly what we’ve needed in a revival for so long. I never thought it would happen, and I never wanted it to happen without Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, and Enrico Colantoni starring or without Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright involved.
Those who are new, I do urge you to watch the earlier seasons first. Catch up and then tune in. But if you want to avoid the current spoilers online, you will get away with watching Season 4 first and treating the first three seasons more of a prequel series.
