Four Weddings and a Funeral review: Modern-day take on an old classic
Hulu’s upcoming comedy, Four Weddings and a Funeral, is a brilliant modern-day take on an old classic. Check out what to expect in this spoiler-free review.
I’ll be the first to admit that I was a little skeptical about the Hulu series reboot of Four Weddings and a Funeral. However, like anything, I go in with an open mind, no expectations, and wait to see what the showrunners and writers have to offer. And let me say that I’m so glad I did that with this.
As a fan of the timeless classic rom-com of the same name, I worried that the Hulu TV series would just copy everything and offer nothing new. Those worries were for nothing. Four Weddings and a Funeral from Hulu is everything we need to bring the old classic to the modern-day. The only thing I’m a little disappointed about is the fact that Nathalie Emmanuel puts on an American accent instead of using her own, especially for a show set in the UK.

Four Weddings and a Funeral follows four friends from college. They all did a semester in the UK and three of them moved to London after college. The fourth (Emmanuel’s Maya) got a job in New York as a political speech writer and decided to remain there. Of course, things happen and eventually she ends up in London with her friends.
Throughout the series, there are plenty of laughs, heartbreaks, tears, and much more. It brings a multicultural, multi-religion, and multi-generational story to this classic tale. There are certainly a number of moments that will make you think of the original, such as Maya’s opening of dropping the F-bomb multiple times from the first seconds of the reboot, but there are also fresh takes on the storylines.
Nothing about this series is fresh and new if you’ve watched romcoms all your life. But, in a way, I don’t think it needs to be. I know lots of people will roll their eyes, but this isn’t a show for those who want something new and different.
If you’re a fan of the good old-fashioned rom coms, then you’re going to wholly enjoy Four Weddings and a Funeral from Hulu. With Mindy Kaling at the heart of the project, I don’t think we should have expected anything different. Mindy is excellent at being funny, being heartfelt, and honoring genres. This is everything she does with this latest project.
One of my favorite storylines is a look at the arranged marriage within a mosque. We all have this view of arranged marriages, whether good or bad. A lot of the opinions come from a lot of movies and TV shows getting things horribly wrong or looking at the idea from a negative angle. Four Weddings and a Funeral doesn’t do that. It goes into this storyline with positivity and respect. Think of the mosque as a religious Tinder!
At no point does the series try to better the original movie with Hugh Grant and Andie McDowell (who gets an awesome cameo) either. It honors it with the odd throwback to the original movie. Yet, at the same time, it wants to stand on its own. Those who haven’t watched the 1990s classic won’t need to in order to find this funny. Those who love the classic will have another TV series they love to watch.

I was pleasantly surprised. What I thought would be something to put on in the background became a seven-episode binge, in the way that Veronica Mars became (okay, that did get a little heavy but not too much) as soon as I got the screeners. I think it will become the same for so many others. When you want something light in a drama-heavy world, this is going to be the cute story you need.
