Don’t like a TV show? Just don’t watch it!
Many people complain when a TV show they don’t like is renewed or a pilot they’re not interested in is picked up to series. How about just don’t watch it instead? Everyone has different tastes!
Every year, people have opinions on various TV shows. I love the diversity. There are certain shows that I choose not to watch or I’ve tried and not got into. However, I step away from them and leave a TV show for the intended fans. One thing that doesn’t make sense is people complaining if a show they don’t like gets renewed.
It happens every year. Whether it’s the Charmed reboot getting picked up to series or reality shows getting renewed for the 100th (or what feels like it anyway) season, people complain about the shows taking up air space.

There’s not really any need for it. It’s not like the network execs really pay attention to those sorts of mutterings on social media. They look at the viewing numbers.
Instead of saying, “I don’t like that show, it should be canceled,” how about paying attention to what fans of the show are saying. I don’t watch The Walking Dead but not once have I said it should be canceled. I tried to watch Stranger Things but couldn’t get into it. Oh well, I moved on and left the show to the fans.
There’s nothing wrong with saying you’re not going to watch something. This is the best way of showing that you’re not interested. If there are enough people like you compared to the people who do watch, the networks will cancel the shows. We see it all the time!
However, there are many people not like you or me. The Walking Dead and Stranger Things have big fanbases. The shows may not be for me, but they are for so many other people. I don’t do much in the way of reality TV, but they have huge fanbases and I just tune out completely, switching the channel to something I will watch instead.
Meanwhile, I’ll watch the likes of The Village, This Is Us, and The Society, but my husband has absolutely no interest. They aren’t/weren’t for him. The world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things.
This has come up because of comments I’ve seen about Veronica Mars possibly being renewed for Season 5. Because of the dislike of a certain death and the change of focus to being about the titular character, fans of the original series don’t want to watch it anymore. Okay, but there are so many others that would like to see more.
If you don’t want to watch it, just don’t watch it! Instead of saying it should be canceled, just step away gracefully and say you hope those who do want it renewed will enjoy it. Wanting it to be canceled just because you don’t like it anymore is actually a little spiteful.
I also find it sad that people knock a show before they even give it a chance or base it just off a few words from a showrunner. I’ve seen that happen way too much, with the likes of the Charmed reboot and now Veronica Mars. And some won’t even give a show a chance to see why a certain storyline played out—there’s often a bigger storyline at play that needs time, but TV show viewers are getting too impatient.

Rather than taking a self-centered view of “I don’t like it, so it shouldn’t be on the air,” how about looking at who could like the show and those who would like more seasons. Consider why it is still on the air and think about the actual fans of the series. A TV show you don’t like getting renewed doesn’t affect you.
Yes, really. People will say that it uses up air time, but is that really the case now with all the streaming services? Probably not!
So, why complain about a TV show you don’t like getting renewed? Why not focus your efforts on the shows you do like? Show the networks what you would like to watch and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be listened to!
