After the latest love triangle-heavy episode, should Season 7 be Younger’s last?

Younger received the green light for Season 7, but following a #TeamCharles vs. #TeamJosh episode, should Liza finally make her choice next year?

Ahead of a brand-new episode of Younger, which marked the halfway point of its sixth season, the TV Land original series earned a renewal for Season 7. The pickup makes the comedy the cable network’s longest-running original series, surpassing Hot in Cleveland’s six seasons. But just how long will Younger stick around before it really starts to show its age?

So far, Younger doesn’t look a day over three seasons, meaning the stories and character chemistry are all still fresh as the honeymoon phase. But we know that all good things must come to an end. Does Season 7 mark the beginning of the hit series’ ending? After an episode that relied heavily on the recently paused central love triangle, next season should be the final season.

Look, most Younger fans (myself included) would be perfectly content watching this cast play these characters for well over a decade, no matter what they’re doing on screen. However, at some point, a series starts to chase its own tail. Season 6, Episode 6 started to run in circles around Liza’s love life, and that’s not a sound means for stability beyond a seventh season.

While away on a microdosing retreat with Charles, the professionally competitive couple run into Josh. Naturally, it’s rather uncomfortable between the three of them, though their issues have been resolved and the past has been left in the past. Still, old feelings come back to haunt Liza as she catches a mighty high from her microdose and confuses her feelings for Charles and Josh.

Simply put, we have done this dance quite a few times throughout six seasons, and even though Katy Perry tells us “just because it’s over doesn’t mean it’s really over,” it seemed as though the love triangle was really over (like a certain lie). At least, until that endgame decision would inevitably arise in the faraway final season. That final season isn’t so far away now that Younger will hit Season 7, and the revival of #TeamCharles vs. #TeamJosh may have been dusted off too soon.

Aside from the narrative constraints of a long-running series, extending beyond the six-season sweet spot runs the risk of cast shake-ups. What would Younger be without any one of the excellent cast members in its ensemble? The day that the series loses even one of its irreplaceable stars is the day that we know that the end is officially near. (Apologies in advance for even putting that energy out there.)

Regardless, another season of Younger is a blessing, and any other season thereafter would be too — so long as the quality of the series isn’t sacrificed for quantity. For now, we will have to wait and see how the second half Season 6 shakes out before knowing what direction Season 7 will take or if the powers that be have their sights set on a final season.
