In an exclusive interview with Hidden Remote, comedian and actor Marina Franklin talks recording her first comedy special, Single Black Female, a Comedy Dynamics production.

Brian Volk-Weiss and Comedy Dynamics hit a home run with this special by Marina Franklin. Single Black Female will have you laughing sporadically long after seeing it. Marina Franklin is just hilarious. Completely and unmistakably hilarious.

Brian Volk Weiss (CEO of The Nacelle Company and Comedy Dynamics) shares the following about this much-anticipated special:

"“Marina is a hysterical and important comic and we’re honored to have produced her long overdue first special.” (Courtesy, Shore Fire Media.)"

Marina Franklin’s on-screen credits include the likes of Chapelle’s Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Conan, The Jim Gaffigan Show, and many others.

Single Black Female is out now on the Comedy Dynamics network and can be purchased on the official website.

Here’s what Marina Franklin had to say to Hidden Remote about acting, touring with Sarah Silverman, and finally getting around to recording her first special.

Hidden Remote: Congrats on the special. So hilarious! I watched it on a road trip with my family and we were all busting up laughing. What drew you to do stand up comedy in the first place?

Marina Franklin: Thanks for watching with your family. That’s a huge compliment. I’m glad the family can watch my special together. What drew me to comedy was an instinct and friends. My friends suggested that I try stand up.  I had just moved to New York and my roommate, from Chicago, would ask me to repeat funny stories about growing up in Chicago.

HR: What is your single most favorite memory of your standup career?

Franklin: When Dave Chappelle pulled me aside to tell me I was funny. It meant a lot to hear this from someone who has mastered their craft.

HR: I understand you have a lot of close friends in the comedy business. How influential have they been in your career?

Franklin: The comedy scene is like a family. No one is helping you out just cause they know you. Like a family, they keep you humble and honest.

HR: How did the tour go with Sarah Silverman? Any fun moments you’d like to share?

Franklin: The tour with Sarah Silverman was fun because I enjoyed her audience. They’re true fans of comedy. It’s a real friendship tour so we easily had a good time, which included recording the requisite super-fun social media videos, and making a late-night ice cream run.

HR: You’ve got lots of impressive on-screen credits. Do you enjoy acting as much as you do standup?

Franklin: Standup is like my husband and acting is like the affair. I love both equally, but I feel like I’m cheating on my husband when I land acting work. Standup will have to get over it.

HR: What was your experience like working with Brian Volk-Weiss and Comedy Dynamics? I know he only works with people he finds hilarious. So congrats!

Franklin: I was happy that Brian wanted to produce my first special. It was long overdue and sometimes you need a little push to get it out there. Thanks for the push, Brian!

HR: Other than this special, what else do you have on the horizon?

Franklin: I am working on tour dates so I can start working towards a new hour. I also produce a weekly podcast, Friends Like Us, that features women of color in comedy chatting up news topics and the comedy world.
