Grand Hotel: 5 intense moments from Season 1, Episode 8

It’s a universal rule that Mondays suck but at least we have Grand Hotel to make things a little bit better in the evenings! This week follows up on the tragic aftermath of the Finn Hotel balcony collapse.

Oddly enough, we don’t learn much about what happened to the Finn or where the former Finn adversaries will go, but that’s because this episode is busy giving us some background information we’ve been waiting for since the pilot. That’s right, we finally find out about the accident that cost Javi his leg.

Both Demián Bichir and Bryan Craig knock it out of the park this week with their father/son moments.

Whether it’s in the flashbacks where we find out what tragic event leads to Javi losing his leg, or in the present where Santiago must help his son through withdrawal, Bichir and Craig are given heavy material this week, and they do a great job portraying all the delicious angst you could ever want.

For starters, in the flashback, it is revealed Javi got black-out drunk after seeing Santiago and Gigi making out. Still grieving his mother, Javi jumps to the worst possible conclusion, that his father was unfaithful. He and Santiago have a blowout fight that leads to Javi threatening to walk out and Santiago throwing him the car keys to do just that. Javi gets into a drunken car accident and loses his leg in the process.

All these years, he’s struggled to look at his son the same way because he’s so ashamed of his actions that night. They have another tearful conversation in the future where Santiago refuses to leave Javi’s side while he goes through withdrawal from painkillers. It feels like we might finally see a new chapter to this relationship moving forward.
