Sam figures out who he is

More from Supernatural

The episode starts with Sam being woken on a park bench by two policemen. With no idea who he is, instinct steps in. He flees from the cops and heads to a bar. The bar is closed, but the bartender, Robin, agrees to help Sam to figure out who he is and where he should be. It’s a book by H.P Lovecraft that kicks off some of his memories of Dean and Bobby. He doesn’t know who they are but his last memory is of a motel called Nite Owl.

While in the parking lot, Sam’s instincts continue to kick in. He needs the room with the best escape route and uses her credit card to open the door. There are papers and clippings all over the walls, along with fake IDs around the room. Robin is worried, but Sam continues to look through everything until he finds a clip about Elanor Visyak being missing.

Sam gets a memory of Elanor bleeding in the alley. She mentions Castiel and Crowley kidnapped and tortured her about opening the door to Purgatory, and she broke after Castiel took over the interrogation. All they need now is the lunar eclipse, which is the next day.

Unfortunately, Eleanor dies before she can give up a location. Castiel then appears, argues with the group, and touches Sam’s head.

The truth about Sam revealed

This last memory reminds Sam of who he is, but he doesn’t remember everything else. However, he does continue to run on instinct, reaching for the keys to the Impala to get to an address from Bobby’s contact book. They head off to Sioux Falls, when someone who looks just like Sam shoots at them.

Everything happening to Sam is in his head. The doppelganger is Soulless Sam, fully intent on killing the soul to take over the body. When Sam kills Soulless Sam, he gets his memories of what he did during his soulless time back. He also remembers that Robin was one of his victims and she disappears when he apologizes for not actually helping her, and he learns that there’s another version of Sam out there.

The third Sam is a Tortured Sam, after spending time in Lucifer’s Cage. Despite Tortured Sam telling Sam that Sam isn’t ready to absorb all the memories, Sam makes it clear that he needs to wake up. He kills Tortured Sam and his body seizes out of control.

Castiel is betrayed

Never trust a demon! As Castiel starts the ritual, Crowley appears with his new business partner: Raphael. Despite being surprised, Castiel gives Crowley the “demon blood,” allowing Crowley and Raphael to complete the ritual to open the door to Purgatory, despite Bobby and Dean trying to stop them.

Nothing happens. Castiel gave different blood and completed his own ritual. He’s been filled with millions upon millions of souls. Crowley gets away, but Raphael is unable to and begs for mercy. Castiel has plans for Crowley but doesn’t need Raphael and kills Raphael.

He chooses to spare Dean and Bobby, refusing to give up the souls because he has Raphael’s followers to deal with. Dean tries to remind Castiel of family, but Castiel doesn’t have a family anymore.

Suddenly, Sam appears, awoken from his coma, and stabs Castiel in the back with an angel blade. Nothing happens. Castiel isn’t an angel anymore. He’s their new God.
