Supernatural Season 7, Episode 1 picks up where the Season 6 finale left us. It’s time for Sam to deal with his hellish memories and Castiel as the new God.

Supernatural left us in a scary place in Season 6. Castiel took on all the souls from Purgatory and because a new God. Meanwhile, Sam’s wall was destroyed (thanks, Castiel!) and memories of Hell came back. There was plenty for the Supernatural Season 7 premiere to cover.

To continue our journey through the last summer Hellatus, we’re starting our look back at Season 7. Here’s a reminder of the events from the Season 7 premiere, titled “Meet the New Boss.”

Castiel spares the Winchesters and Bobby

More from Supernatural

It all picks up from the Season 6 finale, with Bobby, Dean, and Sam kneeling before Castiel. However, he stops them, knowing that they only fear him instead of respecting him. So, instead of smiting them, as threatened, he leaves not repairing the damage he did to Sam’s mind.

Castiel heads to Heaven to kill the angels who sided with Raphael. He then visits a church, where he makes it clear that he doesn’t like hypocrites who claim to speak the for God. As he leaves, we see a burn mark in a pew that he used to steady himself after staggering when he hears his name being called.

Getting help for Sam

Meanwhile, Dean and Bobby need to help Sam. In his unconscious state, they get him back to Bobby’s house. Unfortunately, there’s not much time to help Sam. Castiel is all over the news after bringing the leaders of various religious groups, including the Ku Klux Klan and New Age motivational speaks, down.

Sam is struggling with the memories of Hell, though. Dean and Bobby want to believe that Sam is okay, but it’s clear that they need to do something. They summon Crowley, trying to get the ritual to bind Death in the way Lucifer did back in Supernatural Season 5, so they can make Death kill Castiel.

Crowley tries to stay out of sight

While all this happens, Crowley heads to a trailer full of angel wardings. However, it doesn’t stop Castiel from appearing. Castiel has an offer for Crowley, allowing the King of Hell to remain in that position. However, the only reason Hell will remain is because he needs a threat for his enemies and to keep Michael locked away in Lucifer’s cage.

Crowley has no choice but to agree, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to tell them about what the Winchesters want to do! It’s not surprising that Crowley continues to play both sides throughout this episode.

Getting Death involved

When Death is summoned, bound as promised, he believes that he’s there to help Sam’s situation. He’s surprised to hear that it’s to kill Castiel.

Castiel is summoned and Death points out that Castiel’s vessel is deteriorating because he’s absorbed things older than souls. This is where we learn about the Leviathans, which were created before angels and men. They were the beasts that Purgatory was created for, and now they’re inside Castiel.

Castiel destroys the bonds tying Death to Dean and then leaves. However, Death doesn’t turn on the Winchesters as you would expect. He wants to help the brothers, making sure everything from Purgatory is returned there. They all need to head back to where Castiel absorbed the souls in the first place. Death will even create another eclipse to make sure it’s possible.

Why would Castiel agree to give up the souls? Well, a recent slaughter of everyone in a campaign office helps to convince him. Castiel even apologizes to Dean for everything that happened.

Castiel returns the souls and he looks fine at first. However, it’s soon clear that the Leviathans hung onto Castiel’s vessel. The Leviathans throw Dean and Bobby against a wall, claiming “this is going to be so much fun.”
