Last Christmas is now playing in theaters and uplifting our holiday spirits (while also breaking our hearts), let’s discuss that big twist!

Kicking off the holiday season in theaters is Last Christmas, starring Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding, Emma Thompson, Michelle Yeoh, and others. The movie follows Clarke’s character, Kate, a young woman who, after recovering from an illness, has given up on life. She drinks heavily, has one-night stands, and simply no longer cares about anything. Instead of taking advantage of her second chance, Kate appears to be throwing it all away. That is, until she meets Tom (Golding).

Tom is goofy, cheerful, and always looking at the bright side. Basically, he is the opposite of Kate and exactly what she needs. He appears in her life whenever Kate needs a pick me up and Tom makes Kate forget about all her troubles and to be more positive.

Spoiler alert!

Spoiler alert! Please note, if you have yet to watch Last Christmas in theaters, there are huge spoilers ahead. No kidding, the movie’s big twist is revealed, below. If you’ve seen the movie, we’ll have a chat about what we loved (and didn’t) about this plot twist.

There’s a reason Tom only shows up in Kate’s life randomly. And plenty of hints are dropped: No one else is ever seen talking with Tom, he is always wearing the same clothes, and, the biggest giveaway — he doesn’t have a phone! Guys, who doesn’t have a phone? Okay, joking aside, Tom is dead.

Unfortunately, the fact that Tom is dead was spoiled to me long ago by the horribly edited trailer. Watch it below! I wasn’t the only one. Many of the comments say something such as “I’m starting to think he doesn’t even exist,” “I hope he ain’t some imaginary guy she created,” and “He’s a ghost. Proof! ”

One commenter even goes as far as to guess more of the plot: “The song choice is telling. “Last Christmas I GAVE YOU MY HEART”. She had a heart transplant. He’s the donor.” And this comment was made months ago. Seriously, who is creating these trailers lately? The trailer for Netflix’s Secret Obsession is even worse. It ruins the entire movie.

If you haven’t seen the movie, I do suggest you watch it, anyway. Even if you know about Tom, it’s still a heartwarming film with a great message: Live your best life. We are all truly lucky to be alive and should make the best of it.

Still, had it not been for the trailer, I feel like I would have enjoyed the movie more. The big reveal that Tom is dead and is Kate’s heart donor would have shocked me and I would’ve felt more sad about it all. It would have been more moving, but I enjoyed it nonetheless! Great for kicking off the holiday season.
