Sam’s fear of clowns comes back up in Supernatural Season 7, Episode 14. Here’s a look back at the events that led to that happening.

Since the second season, we’ve known that one of Sam’s greatest fears is clowns. It’s a fear I can relate to, so I don’t often rewatch Supernatural Season 7, Episode 14. I’ve done it for the sake of this recap, but that doesn’t mean I liked it.

Anyway, this episode did things slightly differently to others in the setup. We started in the present day and then went back earlier to figure out how the brothers got to where they were.

Any leads on anything?

More from Supernatural

Flashing back, we find out that the Winchesters have no leads on either Dick Roman or the Amazons from the previous episode. However, Sam does have another case for them to take, so they head off to Kansas in two separate cars.

In that case, it looks like a man has been killed by a 30-ft Pacific octopus with vampire teeth. The victim’s widow can’t help, but the nanny might be able to. It turns out the victim’s daughter, Kelly, had been at Plucky Pennywhistle’s Magic Menagerie for a birthday party. The nanny took her there because the mother was out of town and the father was there briefly before heading back to work.

It’s time to talk to Kelly. You see, Kelly things there’s a monster in the closet and she told her dad that the monster would get him. When Kelly goes back inside, Sam gets to see what Kelly has been drawing on the sidewalk. It’s the monster that attacked the victim.

Another strange case

36 hours before the present day situation, there’s another strange case in Supernatural Season 7, Episode 14. This time, a man was gored by someone riding a horse. That man had been at Plucky Pennywhistle’s the previous night, which immediately sets off alarm bells.

It turns out that Dean would drop Sam off at one of the Plucky Pennywhistle’s around the country when he wanted to pick up girls, and that’s where he gained a fear of Plucky the Clown. Sam heads off to Plucky Pennywhistle’s to find out more about this case, and he learns that the restaurant has been getting kids to draw their worst fears and watch their fears disappear.

The janitor beckons Sam over, offering to tell him something. The catch is Sam needs to come back after closing. However, Sam also sees that the latest victim’s son, Billy, is at the place.

The kids both drew out their fears. Billy’s fear was of unicorns, and his dad was killed by one. When the Winchesters head out to speak to the janitor, he’s already dead, killed by a shark in the ball pit. There’s a drawing missing from the wall. Someone is using the fears to kill people.

Getting to the bottom of the case

When John’s Journal has nothing, the Winchesters head back to Plucky Pennywhistle’s, where Sam intimates the employees. Meanwhile, Dean tries to look out for any odd behavior but he ends up distracted by a giant slinky. He wants to buy one, but Howard refuses to sell for cash. Dean needs to have tickets, so he heads over to the skeeball machine.

Afterward, Dean starts talking to Tyler, a boy who has been left at the place while she works. He doesn’t get much time to talk to the kid, as Sam starts interviewing Cliff, who runs away. Well, he only runs because he’s doing illegal drugs. Nothing that’s going to help them with the case. However, Cliff does tell them that he and Saul, the janitor, heard noises coming from the subbasement.

When the brothers go back inside, they see Tyler leaving with his mom. Tyler mentions a missing drawing, and Sam things that Tyler’s mom is the next victim. Dean heads to the subbasement while Sam keeps an eye on the family.

Sure enough, in the subbasement, there’s a spellbook and mementos. Howard is the one that is controlling everything, and he forces Dean into giving up his weapon and casts a spell on Sam. That brings us to where we are now.

Sam’s attacked by his greatest fear

The whole episode opens with Sam, running from a deranged clown with red eyes. That soon turns into a second clown turning up. When he shoots one of the clowns, glitter explodes but the clown is unmarked. The clowns start beating Sam.

Meanwhile, Dean goes up against Howard. It turns out that Howard is angry about being passed over for a managerial position. Now he wants to get rid of all unfit parents. Howard blames his parents for the death of his brother.

This is perfect for Dean. He uses Howard’s dead brother to kill him. Once Howard dies, the two clowns attacking Sam disappear in showers of glitter. While Dean gets a chance to apologize for accidentally making Sam scared of clowns, Sam gives Dean the giant slinky.
