After being canceled by Netflix last year, One Day at a Time is preparing for a move to Pop. When exactly will Season 4 premiere on the show’s new home?

Fans were devastated when Netflix canceled One Day at a Time last spring. The critically-acclaimed revival was dropped after three seasons due to lack of viewers, according to Netflix. Despite the claim, the passionate fanbase rallied in support on social media for months to get the show back on the air somehow. Luckily, the CBS-owned Pop TV network came through four months later to give the show a new home.

With a network secured, the sitcom’s magnificent storytellers returned to the writers’ room in October to figure out how to proceed with established storylines while also catching new viewers up to speed. The culmination of everyone’s hard work will be on full display come Tuesday, March 24, when One Day at a Time Season 4 officially premieres on Pop.

So, what can fans expect from One Day at a Time now that it’s moving to cable TV?

More from CBS

The same cast

Yes, all of our favorite cast members are returning to reprise their roles as the beloved Latinx family. Justina Machado returns as Penelope Alvarez, the veteran-turned-working mother of busy and growing teenagers, Elena (Isabella Gomez) and Alex (Marcel Ruiz). 88-year-old Rita Moreno won’t miss a beat as the hilarious Cuban matriarch, Lydia. We can also expect to see Todd Grinnell and Stephen Tobolowsky back as Pat Schneider and Leslie Berkowitz.

No more theme song

The One Day at a Time producers revealed during their TCA panel on Monday that Gloria Estafan’s updated theme song will be cut in favor of utilizing the extra 50 seconds for storytelling purposes. The show had a half-hour slot on Netflix and will now adjust to a 21-minute cable television format. Those who will truly miss the opening sequence are advised to find it on YouTube when watching new episodes.

More timely topics

One Day at a Time doesn’t shy away from covering important topics, which is just one reason why fans clamored for the series to be picked up elsewhere. Relationships, sexuality and identity, drug and alcohol abuse, PTSD, mental health, immigration, Hispanic culture – you name it, this sitcom probably has it. Expect to see more timely issues featured in future episodes, which Pat Grinnell finds amazing:

"“I feel safe, whatever comes to us in any script. I find it amazing they can tackle these issues and have a heartfelt moment and then a joke at the same time.”"

Access to ratings

After Netflix canceled the series due to lack of viewership, executive producer Mike Royce noted that everyone is looking forward to the show’s Nielsen ratings since Netflix doesn’t reveal their numbers. However, Royce didn’t shy away in revealing they were the highest-rated show on the streaming platform, which is, in a word, “puzzling.” Royce is also looking forward to being on TV weekly instead of releasing a set of binge-worthy episodes once a year.

How does CBS play a role?

As mentioned earlier, Pop TV is owned by CBS, which adds an interesting caveat to the new TV deal. After all 13 episodes of Season 4 air on Pop, those episodes will rerun on CBS later in 2020, which will hopefully put more eyes on the sitcom. Let’s hope more exposure means more seasons to come after the 2020 run!
