4. “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl”

When looking at episode for this list, one thing came to mind and it’s that Wagstaff episodes have a sore lack of music. Maybe it’s because the kids don’t have much fun at school or that the songs are better set elsewhere. There are a handful of Wagstaff-set episodes that have musical numbers, though. The one that stands out most in Season 5’ is “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl.”

More from FOX

Serving as the Season 5 premiere, this episode is such a fun and unique way to kick off the season. After learning that Wagstaff is allowing students to submit their own musicals to be performed, Gene submits his Die Hard musical, infuriating his ex-girlfriend Courtney who he forbids from being in his show.

Behind his back, she submits her Working Girl musical with the promise of Carly Simon. While Gene is annoyed at first, he decides to perform his musical in the basement. Things go great until Courtney realizes and Mr. Frond cancels the performance. The two eventually work together and “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl” is born.

Of all the episodes on this list, this is easily the most dramatic yet most fun. It’s cool to see two perspectives on the same situation as Gene and Courtney want different things. In the end, though, they’re able to work it out. While there are a handful of other good episodes set at Wagstaff in Season 5, none can even touch “Work Hard or Die Trying, Girl.”
